I SYNAGOGUES Danzig Community Treasures Topic Of Beth Achim Lecture The Adult Educa- tion/Cultural Commission of Cong. Beth Achim will pre- sent a lecture and slide show entitled "Danzig 1939: The Treasurers of a Destroyed Community" on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Cong. Beth Achim. The program is open to the community, and there is no admission charge. Dr. Vivian Mann, curator of Judaica at the Jewish Museum of New York, will give the presentation. In the summer of 1939 a number of large crates were delivered to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. They contained ceremonial objects, books, scrolls and many other religious articles from the Jewish community of the Free City of Danzig, which was about to be destroyed by the Nazis. With the assistance of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee the Danzig Jewish community ar- ranged to ship these religious objects to the Jewish Theological Seminary for safekeeping. It was stipulated Dr. Vivian Mann that if after 15 years there were no safe and free Jews in Danzig the collection would remain in Atherica for the education and inspiration of free Jews in the rest of the world. Today, the Free City of • Danzig is known as Gdansk, Poland. - The collection has been an integral part of the Jewish Museum from its early years when the museum was hous- ed in the seminary's library to today, at the museum's pre- sent home on Fifth Avenue in New York City. In recent years the collection has been on display in various cities throughout the United States. In addition to her work as curator of this collection, Dr. Mann was the curator of "The Precious Legacy: Judaic Treasures from the Czechoslovak State Collec- tion" which was displayed at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She also has lectured throughout the United States and is presently adjunct pro- fessor, Graduate School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, in addition to her present position as curator of Judaica at the Jewish Museum. Dr. Mann has received many honors, including a fellowship for museum profes- sionals from the National En- dowment for the Arts. Together with the Cultural Commission this program is endowed by President Ron Harris and his wife Marcia and board member Alan Sukenic and his wife Shelley. Tobi Fox is chairman of the Cultural Commission
