"It was really fun. I loved it a lot. I think that really encouraged me to go back (to Chicago next year), because I had so much fun. It wasn't all just 'sleep, you have to swim tomorrow, rest, you have to swim.' We had a lot of privileges to do whatever we wanted. I had a lot of fun:' Linda's current goal is to qualify for the USS Junior National meet next April, with times in several dif- ferent events which are fair- ly close to those necessary to qualify for the Senior Na- tionals. To put that in perspective, "Senior Na- tionals is about one second away from Olympic qualify- ing times," she said. Great success generally breeds greater expectations, and Linda's case is no dif- ferent. But she is just begin- ning to think about the great prizes in swimming, such as the Pan American Games, or the Olympics. McClune says, "A la of people, like younger kids on our team, will always come up to me and ask something like, 'Do you think Linda has a chance to go to the Olympics?' " McClune emphasizes the fact that there are about 140,000-150,000 registered swimmers, on teams like the Stingrays, throughout the U.S. Only about 26 U.S. Swimmers make the Olym- pics every four years. "The odds of someone being at their physical peak and train- ing for that potential every four years is pretty tough. I think Linda has a chance to become a high school state champion — she's already pro- ven that she can do the work, handle the load. She's broken the state records of previous high school state champions . . . I think she's going to pro- gress along those lines." Linda admits that while watching swimming competi- tions, such as this summer's Pan Am Games, she sometimes pictures herself swimming in those types of events. And she has thought about the 1992 Olympics, when she will be 18. That means that swimming is now becoming more serious for her, and consequently, for her family. They still do not push Linda, but they definitely want her to fulfill her poten- tial. "They're behind me, a lot, because they don't want me to stop," she says. "According to what_ _ we've heard from other coaches and from people around the coun- try," says Ralph, "she's got a big future in swimming, and it'd be a shame if she just said goodbye to it. So at this age, I think she's being very good about it. She wants to take a shot at it. It takes a lot of hard work, a lot of effort, and she understands it and I think she wants to go through with it and take a shot at it." He adds, "Right now is where she's going to try to make a push. The rest of it, up through 12 years old, has been a lot of fun, and hasn't been very heavy work, has it?" he asks his daughter. "No," replies Linda. "It's been just competing at her own age level," Ralph con- tinues. "Now let's see if she wants to go on to the next step. And it's going to be up to her. If she wants to, she'll do it." And if she wants to, the Goldstein family will be there behind her, every stroke of the way. ❑
