The David Oppenheim
Family Teachers' Institute
has invited noted scholar and
educator, Dr. David Elkind, to
lecture on "A Sympathetic
Understanding of the Child"
on Dec. 6.
Luncheon will be served at
1 p.m. and the lecture will
begin at 1:45 p.m. at the main
Jewish Community Center.
Elkind is professor of child
study and senior resident
scholar at the Lincoln Filene
Center at Tufts University.
He was formerly professor of
psychology, psychiatry and
education at the University of
Rochester. His research has
been in the areas of percep-
tual, cognitive and social
development where he has at-
tempted to build upon the
research and theory of Jean
Piaget.
Prof. Elkind's bibliography
includes research and
theoretical articles, book
chapters and books. Professor
Elkind is best known for his
two most recent books, The
Hurried Child and All Grown
Up and No Place to Go. A new
book entitled, Miseducation:

Preschoolers at Risk, is
scheduled for publication this
year.
Teacher Research Project
Awards will go to four local
teachers who have im-
plemented innovative ideas in
their classroom. This year's
recipients and project titles
are: Flo Rita Bloch, "The
Tzedakah Experience";
Roslayn Bloch, "Sabbath
Workshop in the Home";
Carol Seligson, "Puppetry in
Early Education"; and Rabbi
Shmuel State, "Pictorial Ap-
proach to Teaching Laws and
Customs."

The David Oppenheim
Family Teachers' Institute
was established in 1985 by
Royal Oppenheim and Dr.
Patricia Oppenheim. This
city-wide teacher training in-
stitute offers conferences,
seminars and in-service train-
ing for educators in local
Jewish and Hebrew day and
afternoon and Sunday School.
