The Radisson Opens
With Good Planning

DANNY RASKIN

W

hen a new hotel
opens in an area,
the usual thoughts
by many are not how good it
is, but rather what are the
bad points . . . This is
especially true in the
restuarant or restaurants of
that hotel . . . because it can
mean either returning or
staying away.
The new management at
Radisson Plaza Hotel on Nor-
thwestern Highway was
smart .. . Prior to opening
the doors of its restaurants,
the elegant Bouquets and
Tango's European Bistro, it
had a dry run that was not
made on employees . . . but
actual potential customers
. . . It was like a turnabout in
psychology as if to say, "This
is a sample of what we're not
going to do."
Bouquets hadn't been open
yet . . . and so everyone was
seated in the Tango's area
which is only a partial glass
wall away . . . As could be ex-
pected, service was spotty,
food mediocre and forget
about the ambience . . . after
all, the Radisson wasn't even
completed . . . work was still
going on . . . and only one of
the two restuarants had been
finished.
Some would consider this a
very daring endeavor . . . and
it was . . . But a ray of con-
fidence that comes from ex-
perience shone through it all
and those who realized could
know that this might be the
beginning of something very
worthwhile.
The most important part of
it all is that the Radisson
achieved a learning ex-
perience . . . As one of
America's fastest growing
upscale hotel companies,
Radisson has a reputation of
knowing what it is doing .. .
Customers in all parts of the
country and in each city may
be different . . . their likes
and dislikes had to be learn-
ed . . . as well as the achieve-
ment of competent service
and food.
When the Radisson Plaza
hotel at Town. Center opened
in September, it immediately
became one of Metropolitan
Detroit's preferred luxury
hotels for the business and
vacation traveler, conferences,
corporate meetings, banquets
and • other functions.
This $50 million, 295,000
square foot upscale hotel now
has 358 luxury guest rooms,
two ballrooms and six con-

ference meeting rooms . . . For
recreation, the Radisson
Plaza has an indoor pool,
sauna, exercise room and
whirlpool.
It is connected to the
Prudential Town Center com-
plex, a 65-acre, mixed use of-
fice, retail and entertainment
development . . . The
Radisson hotel corp. last year
received a five-star rating as
one of the two best hotel com-
panies in the nation from
American Association of
Traveler Editors, with five
stars being the highest rating
given by this accredited
organization.
The worldwide class of this
hotel operation soon became
evident in its two local
restaurants and lounge . . . It
had taken the initiative to get
out whatever wrinkles would
be apparent . . . and opened
with confidence instead of
hope.
Now, from the moment you
enter the Radisson Plaza with
its huge lobby, gold elevator
doors, potted plants, piano,
smiling and efficient person-
nel, there is an aura that
defies challenge.
Bouquets seats 85, Tango's
100, bar and lounge another
85.
My Bouquets experience
after Radisson had opened
and was on its way, seeme to
have a "show me" mood .. .
That Radisson did . . . and
most convincingly.

From the time Susan Watz-
man, Bouquets very gracious,
cordial and extremely effi-
cient manager . . . and most
congenial smiling hostess
Barbara LaForest greeted us
at the front desk, I knew we
were headed for a delightful
experience.
Tiger-mania was going on
with hopes of the Detroit
baseball club beating Toron-
to and getting to the World
Series . . . All personnel, in-
cluding Susan; Wayne Ryan,
food and beverage director;
Gregory Parsons, residence
manager; and Bill Kirkhoff,
general manager; were wear-
ing Tiger caps.
My waiter, Bashar Rabban,
astutely said that the only
way the Tigers could lose
would be if anyone other than
Toronto would beat them .. .
Seven crucial games at the
end of the regular season
were with Toronto, but there
were the playoffs . . . which
they lost to Minnesota, who
eventually went on to win the
World Series.
The large French Villeroy
and Bach plates were an
