The Numerical Game of
Dreidel: The letters on the
dreidel are given their
numerical Hebrew values:
nun = 50, gimmel = 3, heh =
5, shin = 300. Each player
spins and receives the points
of the top letter when the
dreidel stops. The winner is
the first to reach a score of
1,000 or any other number
agreed upon in advance.
The Longest Spin is
another game played with the
dreidel. At a given signal
everyone spins a dreidel. The
player whose dreidel spins the
longest is the winner.
In another game, "The Hid-
den Dreidel," one player
leaves the room while the
others hide the dreidel. When
the player returns and searches
for the dreidel the other
players sing a Chanukah
song, singing louder as the
searcher comes closer to the
hidden dreidel and softer as
the player moves away.

The Maccabees
In Christianity

Chanukah is mentioned in
the Gospel of John: "It was
the Feast of Dedication of the
Temple at Jerusalem; and it
was winter" (10:22). There is
evidence that the early Chris-
tians were intrigued by the
Chanukah festival and its
heroes.
The Jewish Scriptures do
not include the books of the
Maccabees, but relegated
them to the Apocrypha.
However, 1 and 2 Maccabees
have been accepted as
canonical by the Catholic
Church. This was confirmed
by the councils of Florence
(1441), Trent (1546), and
Vatican I (1870), which
reiterated that these works
were inspired by God.

to his kinsmen and his
followers. the origin of this
surname is shrouded in
uncertainty. The Hebrew
original source has been lost;
the earliest extant record is
the Greek Makkabaios, which
has been transliterated into
Hebrew. Maccabee may be
derived from the Hebrew
word meaning "hammer,"
equating Judah with its great
strength.
