Mrs. Cohen, the author of
four books for children, pub-
lished by BJE Press, added,
"What's most valuable in
reading to children is that
they learn the rhythm of
language, the love of reading,
and experience the special
time together."

Ruth Musnikow, the de-
partment's assistant director,
emphasized that a child
should receive "daily doses"
of being read to. The best
time is in the evening, when
both parent and child are
relaxed. The time spent does
not have to be long, but it
should be regular, she said.

"Make sure you are not
disturbed during this time; it
should be set aside specifical-
ly for your child and you.
Nothing should come be-
tween the parent and child
during this time," Mrs.
Musnikow said.
Other important tips on
reading to your child are:
• When a parent reads to a
child, there are more positive
elements involved than in a
classroom situation. Parents
often use higher quality
language, or stop to explain,
and there is greater interac-
tion between the parent and
child. So don't stop reading to
your child just because he's
attending school.
• When a parent enjoys
reading, children become
more enthusiastic and look
forward to hearing stories.
Parents should choose books
they also enjoy.
• It is better to select
books that are simple, rather
than too complex. The books
read should be at or a little
above the child's level.
• A child learns early on
that books are to be respected
and handled with care. If a
page tears, it should be re-
paired at once. Involve the
child in this activity.
• The child's first exper-
iences with books will be an
important factor in determin-
ing what his attitude toward
reading will be.
• When children hear the
same stories many times,
some will learn to read them.
Good children's books are
easy to find, but look for
quality ones with easy-to-read
print and colorful illustra-
tions to excite the child's
imagination.
