There's no doubt about it. The
way we used to embarrass
him is ask for his autograph."
Attorney Rick Ungar added
that Shafran is very gentle,
considerate and family
oriented. That's obvious as
his face lights up when he
talks about two-year-old
Megan. And, adds Ungar he's
got a great sense of humor.
"He's very witty. it's a natural
kind of humor; it comes in-
stinctively to him."
Vice President/Operations
Joel Lind said Shafran's "gift
for communicating with the
audience" is what makes him
so successful. "He has a real
ability to speak the listeners'
language. He's very natural-
ly a warm sensitive guy."
Lind said Shafran's "upbeat
nature" without giving the

phones, "opens up the mike"
and in his soft, mellow voice
begins five hours of a little
friendly talk and a lot of
music. It's that balance of
music and light banter,
Shafran said, that makes
radio fun. "What do I like
best about being in radio?
Communicating with the peo-
ple, playing good music and
being a friend (to listeners)."
He's proven to be such a
good friend, that some
listeners send him cakes and
presents on his birthday, and
that, according to his friend
attorney Dan Sandberg, em-
barrasses him. Sandberg, who
worked with the mellow-
voiced, soft-spoken Shafran at
the Southfield High radio sta-
tion, said that is true of his
character. "He's really shy.
feeling that he is performing
lends to his appeal." Most
of Shafran's friends are out-
side the broadcasting com-
munity, although, TV
weatherman Chuck Gaidica
is a close associate. "Most of
my friends are a handful of
friends I've had forever. I stay
away from broadcasting (peo-
ple) because I see them every
day."
In the Jewish community,
Shafran lends his talents to
charitable events, such as the
Hillel Day School fund raiser
Saturday night. A member of
Temple Beth El, Shafran said
he is not real active now, but
as his daughter grows, he
predicted his participation
will increase.
Shafran said he couldn't see
himself as a station owner,
but if he were, he'd have to
have a hand in programming.
And if he couldn't be a disc
jockey anymore? "It would
almost have to be something
in entertainment, whether it
would be in advertising,
because occasionally I do free-
lance commercials that run.
That I love."
Shafran has lasted through
ten years of format changes
and ownership changes at
WNIC. If he could stay
another ten years at the sta-
tion would he? "Yeah, who
knows what's going to hap-
pen. Yeah, I'd like to stay here
as long as they'll have me. As
long as the ratings stay okay."
