"The Jews are worse than
my own people, the Irish, who
still want to be the chosen
race — chosen by Lord
Balfour. They can go to
Palestine and stew in their
own juice. The rest had better
stop being Jews and start be-
ing human beings.
"The day of races and na-
tions is over; the future
belongs to the citizens of the
world that they are no better
than other people . . . You
asked for a 'Shofar Blast' and
now you have got it."
These were the words of
celebrated writer George Ber-
nard Shaw, told to the Jewish
press just before Rosh
Hashanah about 50 years ago
in what became known as the
"Shofar Blast." His criticism
of Jews was strongly attack-
ed by the Jewish community.
Jews were at least as upset
by his statement upon
emergence from the Soviet
Union: "The world has made
peace with the Jews, but the
Jew refuses to make peace
with the world!'
Soon after, Shaw arrived in
Bombay during a world
cruise. The luxurious liner on
which he sailed anchored on
a bright, sunny morning.
Shaw was said to be not very
friendly toward journalists, I
was warned. He explained
that he was not in favor of the
Jews being a separate entity
but rather that "they should
assimilate with the rest of the
people among whom they
dwell!'
"The Jews," he continued,
"should cease styling
themselves the 'Chosen Peo-
ple of God! They should not
despise the Gentiles and the
Gentiles the Jews. They
should not have the same
superiority complex as my
own people, the Irish!"
What did he think of the
Jewish problem and what did
he recommend as the best
solution? "There is no Jewish
problem," he answered. "I do
not think that there is
anything extraordinary in
the Zionist movement!'
I asked if his recent visit to
Palestine changed or in-
fluenced his conception of the
Zionist ideal.
He replied: "I did not go
around very much, and what
I saw was houses being
erected. I was not inspired by

what I saw. Jerusalem is not
a spiritual place and the Jews
must not think that God is
confined to Jerusalem alone.
The Jewish God is old-
fashioned; Jerusalem should
be like Sheffield or Leeds
(England). There is no God
who is not equally in any
other country!'
Commenting on the Balfour
Declaration, he stated: "It
was all right for the Jews, but
not for the Arabs. The decla-
ration was made on account of
the invaluable service ren-
dered by an eminent Jew" —
Chaim Weizmann, who, he
humorously remarked —
"surprisingly refused any
monetary consideration, and
who asked that Palestine be
established as the national
home of the Jews."
"Don't you think the Jews
have an historical right to
Palestine?" I asked.
"None whatsoever," he
replied, "just as the English
seized India, the Jews seized
Palestine, and what did they
do — just fight among
themselves. The Jews have
always been ungovernable
and are revolutionists. Have
you not read Josephus'
History of the Jews? The Jew
is the most ferocious fighter
and not at all peace-loving;
the Jews hew their enemies to
pieces!'
I rebutted that peace is
essentially a Jewish teaching,
but he replied: "So do Gandhi
and Jesus, who was also a
Jew, teach, but how many
follow these teachings? The
Jew has to live by his brains
all the time!'
Here Shaw struck a note of
warning: "Jews must hold
their own in Palestine; not
even Great Britain or any
other nation helps them in
the realization of the objective
of the Balfour Declaration;
they must show strategy if
they want to advance!'
