GALA BALL OR
MURDER MYSTERY PARTY
hundred at most — the ADL
warns that their ranks are
growing and "that they have
the potential for attracting
alienated youth, particularly
because of their close associa-
tion with hard-driving music
known as 'white-power' rock."
Whether Skinheads were
responsible for the
Kristallnacht attacks or not,
said Michael Kotzin, ADL
Regional Director, Chicago
Jews "are reacting to the in-
cident more with indignation
than fear." He said the acts
"remind us that the kind of
hatred which generated the
Holocaust still exists."
Others echoed that feeling.
William Rosenblum, whose
book store was one of the
targets of the attack, said, "I
am not a man to be scared.
On the other hand, it makes
me think: where does this
hate come from and why does
it keep coming?"
"If you are a Jew and you
don't know this is something
that can happen, you are
awful dumb," said Ed Hobfoll,
whose butcher shop was at-
tacked. Hobfoll noted it was
the fifth time vandals had
smashed his windows in the
50 years he has been in
business.
"My reactions were of grief,
that men could still have this
kind of hatred in their
hearts," added Rabbi Green-
man. "It was a cowardly act.
It didn't frighten me. I sup-
pose I was surprised by the
vandalism, but only by the
magnitude of it. I am not sur-
prised by anti-Semitic acts."
The day after the acts, a
press conference was held at
which the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Chicago an-
nounced a $10,000 reward for
information leading to the
conviction of those responsi-
ble for the vandalism. At the
press conference, represen-
tatives of several ethnic, civic
and religious groups ex-
pressed their solidarity with
the Jewish community.
"We call on all pastors, rab-
bis, priests and religious
leaders to denounce these
crimes as the sins they are, in
the strongest possible terms,"
said the Rev. David Whiter-
more of the Council of
Religious Leaders of
Metropolitan Chicago. "The
lack of respect, the loss of
reverence, the emotional
poverty, fear and insecurity
that give root to such evil, if
left unchallenged and en-
countered, can destroy us all?'
In a statement, Chicago
Mayor Harold Washington,
who later made a walking
tour of West Rogers Park,
said, "though these are the
acts of just a few individuals,
the crimes are an attack on
the whole city."
But that attack of in-
dividuals was being felt most
deeply by individuals.
Samuel Cizek, a salesman at
the Kosher Zion Sausage
Company, whose two front
windows were smashed, said
the incident hit him par-
ticularly hard. A survivor of
the Buchenwald concentra-
tion camp, Cizek said the van-
dalism reminded him that
anti-Semitism still exists. "I
feel terrible. It's not just a
broken window. It hurts deep
down."
And it may not be over, add-
ed Hobfoll. "It was a celebra-
tion for them, a party. You can
imagine what will happen
next year when it's the 50th
anniversary. This year, thank
God, it was only broken
glass."
Japanese Trade
Group In Israel
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A high-
level Japanese trade delega-
tion arrived here last week for
talks on commercial relations
and international economic
conditions. According to
observers, this may be a fur-
ther signal that Japan is end-
ing its long-standing tilt
toward compliance with the
Arab League boycott of Israel.
The delegation, which met
with Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres, is headed by
Nihichiro Hanamura, chair-
man of an umbrella organiza-
tion of Japanese businesses.
Israel's ambassador to Japan,
Yaacov Cohen, who flew in
from Tokyo for the talks,
noted that this is the 15th of-
ficial delegation from Japan
to visit Israel since 1985.
Prior to that year there were
none.
