A GALA
NEW YEAR'S EVE BALL
would move to take the place
of Jews who came to Israel
from Arab countries and left
their property behind. The
purchases were made bet-
ween 1968 and 1970.
Israel also was prepared to
buy land in Brazil and Argen-
tina for the same purpose, ac-
cording to Haaretz. The Israel
Lands Administration was
responsible for contacting
Arab families and their pro-
perty in the West Bank and
conducting negotiations.
Arab residents willing to
leave were issued new
passports and flown to their
destinations, Haaretz said.
But the policy was not suc-
cessful. Only a few hundred
people left, mostly for the
United States.
The acquisitions in Libya
were mainly Italian farms
and they are presumably still
registered in the names of the
Israeli purchasers, Haaretz
said.
New Tunisian
Head Welcomed
Paris (JTA) — Tunisia's tiny
Jewish community welcomed
the ascension to the presiden-
cy of Prime Minister Zine el
Abidine Ben Ali, even though
the man he deposed last
weekend, President Habib
Bourguiba, was regarded by
Jews as their "protector."
There are about 3,500 Jews
out of a total population of 6.9
million in Tunisia, a North
African Arab state which won
independence from France in
1956. Bourguiba was its first
and only president until Ben
Ali, whom he had appointed
prime minister, took over in a
bloodless coup, declaring the
84-year-old incumbent to be
"senile" and unable to run
the country.
Tunisian Jews, contacted by
Jewish organizations in Paris,
said the rise of Ben Ali to
power was an assurance that
their safety and well-being
would not be threat-
ened.
Opera Slated
New York (JTA) — The most
lavish and costly project in
operatic history, an $11.5
million production of
Guiseppe Verdi's Nab ucco
(Nebuchadnezzar), will be
performed a dozen times in
Jerusalem next May as the
major attraction of Israel's
year-long celebration to mark
its 40th anniversary of
independence.
