rhetoric about Israel.
Hyman Bookbinder, the
chief lobbyist for the
American Jewish Commit-
tee, at least pretends to ad-
dress the topic, though he
essentially offers his own
thumbnail history of Israel
rather than an explanation
of why support for that na-
tion is in Washington's best
interests.
James G. Abourezk,
onetime senator from
South Dakota turned lob-
byist for all things Arab,
had a marvelous oppor-
tunity to show his rival up,
had he offered anything
like a thoughtful critique of
America's often-fumbling
Middle East policy. In-
stead, Mr. Abourezk pro-
ceeds to make Mr. Book-
binder look good by unveil-
ing a torrent of venom
against Israel.
"Anyone who has read
this far has to be
dismayed," the moderator,
David K. Shipler, former
Jerusalem bureau chief for
the New York Times, says
wearily when his turn
comes at last. Alas, things
then only get worse, as Mr.
Bookbinder and Mr.
Abourezk chase each other
around the "Does Israel
have a right to exist?"
Maypole. If this be
dialogue, then the collected
speeches of Konstantin
Chernenko are
Shakespeare.

Herzog's Bears
Make Aliyah

Geneva (JTA) — Two offspr-
ing of a Syrian with the
familiar name Assad left
Switzerland for Israel after
departure ceremonies attend-
ed by the Israeli ambassador
to Switzerland, David Rivlin,
and members of the Bern
Jewish community.
The "olim," named Dubi
and Berna, have homes
waiting for them in
Jerusalem, at the Biblican
Zoo. They are young bears,
presented to President Chaim
Herzog of Israel when he
visited Bern last April. At the
time, they were newborns, too
young to travel.
The father bear was born in
Syria, which probably ac-
counts for his name, which he
shares with Syrian President
Hafez Assad.
