Adat Shalom Wins Award For Family Education Adat Shalom Synagogue was awarded the Solomon Schecter Award, presented biennially by the United Synagogue of America. Of the 800 member synagogues, Adat Shalom won top honors in the category of family education for congregations over 750 families. Sanford Eichenhorn, a na- tional vice-president of the United Synagogue of America and the Michigan Region president, accepted the award on behalf of his synagogue which he serves as vice-president. Irwin Alter- man, president of the con- gregation, thanked Sharon Hart, past chairman of the Adult Study Commission, who was responsible for the programming and compiling of the information that led to the winning of the award. Over the past two years the synagogue has pursued a pro- gram which incorporated special family worship ser- vices, holiday celebrations, educating families in Jewish values and parallel program- ing for parents with their children's religious education. The synagogue was the focal point of outdoor Kabbalat Shabbat services, family pic- nics and life cycle events. The Jewish Experiences for Families program, under the guidance of Harlene Ap- pleman, has facilitated chavurot programming and the involvement of young people.
