Palestinians left their homes

The pre-debate demonstra-
tion was sponsored by the
Detroit Zionist Federation
and the local branch of
Americans for a Safe Israel.
Individuals associated with
the pro-Kahane Committee
for the Jewish Idea also car-
ried picket signs.
Afterward, listeners seemed
mostly pleased with the
debate.
"It gives the Jewish com-
munity a chance to hear so-
meone from the other side in
a non-confrontational en-
vironment," commented
Francine Rosenberg-Ballard."
Said Henry Faigin: "I think
if more Jews and Arabs could
sit down on a public platform,
it would aid the cause of peace
in the Middle East."
"But not with the PLO,"
Helen Range remonstrated
him. "Most of them are
mercenaries. They don't care
about Palestine at all."
Sheryl King noted that
both men's opinions were
already well known.
"Nothing earth shattering
was said. But there is a lot to
agree about on both sides."
Bookbinder made his first-
ever appearance before an
Arab American audience at
the Kingsley Inn Sunday.
Abourezk told the gathering
that he had a good reception
at the Jewish Center and "I
know that you're going to be
just as polite [to Bookbinder]."
Bookbinder told The Jewish
News afterward, "It is my
hope now that those in the
community who had
understandable concerns
about this project now will
review their attitude in light
of what did transpire; that
our Jewish predilection for
open-fire debate can indeed
be helpful to our cause."
