Dr. Saltzstein For half a century, Dr. Harry Saltzstein had the rating among the highest ranking surgeons in Michigan. Then commenced a career as a medical writer and he became the leading historiographer of Detroit's Sinai Hospital. His death on his 97th birthday on Nov. 11, was at a time when the records he compiled of the Sinai Hospital are to be ex- panded into a full-length com- munal history. Sinai historical data cur- rently assembled by Dr. Herbert Bloom is based in great measure upon Dr. Saltzstein's research. Nearly seven decades ago, Dr. Saltzstein was among the champions of a Jewish hospital to counteract anti- Semitic prejudices against Jewish doctors and patients in local hospitals and on a nation-wide basis. It was at the turn of this century that the landsman- shaften and Yiddish-speaking factions here organized the Hebrew Hospital Association to propagate establishment of a Jewish hospital. The func- tioning leaders, the Jewish Welfare Federation influence, was strongly against such a hospital. It opposed parochialism. Then came a turn in sentiments. Support increased and Dr. Saltzstein was among the "converts to the hospital movement" who acted firmly to make it a reality. Dr. Saltzstein was ma- jor in the ranks of those who achieved it. Dr. Saltzstein was a 1910 graduate of Yale University and a 1914 graduate of Johns Hopkins school of medicine. He did his internship in 1917 at Sinai Hospital New York, then became a captain in the Army Medical Corps during World War I, serving in France. In 1921, he came to Detroit to join the Harper Hospital surgical staff. He became chief of surgery at Sinai when it opened in Detroit in 1953, staying in that post until 1957. He retired in 1961. Dr. Saltzstein was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Michigan and Wayne County Medical Societies, American Medical Associa- tion, American Board of Surgery, Detroit Surgical Society, Detroit Academy of Surgery, American College of Surgeons, American Gastroenterology Associa- tion, Society of Head and Neck Surgeons and American Medical Writers Association. Dr. Saltzstein is survived by a brother-in-law, Herschel Kreger; nieces, cousins and nephews, including David C. Kreger and Alan T. Kreger. Janet Rudoff Janet Rudoff, a former Detroiter who was involved in the activities of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in Santa Monica, Calif., died Oct. 19 at age 57. She is survived by her hus- band, Leonard; three sons, Roger and Mathew, both of Mountainview, Calf., and Douglas of Redondo Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Judith) Bensky of Southfield and Marian Meyers of Santa Monica.
