WINTERIZE YOUR SPRINKLING SYSTEM NOW portion, less than a mile long, is narrow and unpaved. The "natural beauty" deci- sion, expected within the next few months, would likely af- fect the future of a proposed water main six feet in diameter that the Detroit Water and Sewage Depart- ment hoped to run • smack below that stretch of 14 Mile. In the planning stages for nearly two decades, the main would link an existing water system near 1-75 and Adams Road with a pumping station near 14 Mile and Inkster. The new main would provide water from Lake Huron to southern Oakland County, now served with water from the Detroit River. Some have claimed that the "natural beauty" label is an attempt to disrupt the water main project. "I don't think the two are related at all," said William McEntee, environmental con- cerns coordinator for the Oakland County Road Com- mission. "No one is against it." Last week, local residents filled the chambers of the Franklin Village Council for a public hearing conducted by the Oakland County Board of Road Commissioners to discuss this section of 14 Mile and the importance of preser- ving natural beauty in urban settings. The group claims more than 20 tree species and 30 different herbs are growing on the roadside. In addition, deer, fox, pheasants, herons and three types of squirrels have been sighted. In the next 30 days, McEntee must make a recom-, mendation on the designation to the road commission, which will make the final decision. However, the com- mission could hold off on their decisibn until the water main is installed. # LET THE PROFESSIONALS DO IT Prevent: FLOODED BASEMENT FROZEN PIPES DON'T THINK THIS CAN'T HAPPEN TO YOU!!
