"It was ridiculous," Com- missioner Jacobs said of the recall. "I'm not sure why the public feels they have to go around recalling people all the time." But residents feel the recall was the best way to catch the commissioners attention. "It was a very effective tactic," said recall leader Sidney Kar- don, who was against dropp- ing the proceedings. "We never would have had an Ad Hoc Committee without the recall and plans to slope cor- ners so cars turn faster onto the sidestreets wouldn't have been modified. It wasn't until we went to the county and fil- ed a recall that the city com- mission actually voted for the corner cuts. Fear for their reputations made them more conciliatory." In West Bloomfield, a group of residents angered by a lack of parks, excessive develop- ment and the resulting traf- fic congestion filed a recall against four township board members. This week, however, the group's petition was denied certification by the Oakland County Elec- tions Commission due to unclear language. The group, Organizations United to Save the Township(OUST), is expected to appeal. At least one local recall petition, however, has recent- ly been approved. Oakland County businessman Lowell Ruppenthal, bested by Rep. David Gubow in last year's election, has launched a se- cond attempt to recall the Huntington Woods Democrat. Last June, Gubow voted in favor of a $180 million state budget increase which Rup- penthal of Ferndale is calling grounds for removal. Ruppenthal was defeated by Gubow by a 3-to-1 ratio. He dropped his first recall action when he decided to run against Gubow. He now needs a minimum of 5,981 signatures to force a recall vote. "A recall seems to be the on- ly strong message people can send to Lansing to stop these guys from spending money like drunken sailors," Rup- penthal said. But local politicians disagree. "A recall is an expensive project," said Commissioner Jacobs. "We have a democratic system. If you don't like someone in power, you can throw the bum. Out on election day. Unfortunately there's a real distrust of local politicians." Wallenberg Continued from Page 5 A new exciting look. Come in and see the wonderful selection of pendants, enhancers, earrings and rings. But Wallenberg rescued thousands, issuing mimeographed "official" documents and even cajoling the nervous Nazis to allow "his" Jews to remain in 32 safe houses he established in Budapest. "Why did he do it?" asked Jacob. "Who knows? Maybe he was trying to live up to the family motto: "Ib be, not to be seen: He had a moral duty to do what was right, to stand up to what was wrong." Annette Lantos' campaign on behalf of Wallenberg has led to several Soviet denials that Wallenberg is still alive in a Soviet prison. The Soviets have claimed that he died of a heart attack in 1947, but Soviet emigres as recent- ly as 1981 say Wallenberg has been sighted in the Gulag. Rep. Lantos initiated legislation making Wallenberg only the second person in history to be granted honorary U.S. citizen- ship. The first was Winston Churchill. Lantos called the HMC and similar centers important to the effort to never forget the Holocaust. ....1 LOCAL NEWS 14 Mile Road: Beauty And The Water Main LILA ORBACH Special to The Jewish News R esidents of Franklin Village and neighbor- ing townships are awaiting word on the future of 14 Mile Road between In- kster and Franklin Roads, a dirt-covered strip lined with flora, fauna and pot holes. The residents have formed a group, the Natural Beauty Road Committee, aimed at of- ficially designating the road- way a "natural beauty road" — a distinction designed to preserve native vegetation by limiting the use of herbicides and requiring a public hear- ing before major construction projects can be started. While most of 14 Mile Road is considered a major thoroughfare, this narrow
