In a long story on page 1, Robert I. Friedman examined Rabbi Meir Kahane's success in soliciting funds from American Jews. These funds are used to finance Kahane's extremist political activities in Israel. "Kahane's amazing political success in Israel has been the result in large part of his ability to raise money from wealthy American Jews in America," Friedman wrote. Friedman also charged that Kahane's group has raised money for cultural, religious and educational purposes that is actually used to finance his political activities. This tactic violates IRS regulations governing tax ex- empt foundations. In a second op-ed article, the editor of the Middle East Policy Survey suggested that the underlying cause of the Iran-Contra fiasco was the ad- ministration's admiration of Israeli "derring-do!' Israel, Richard Straus sug- gested, did not lead America astray, as Vice President Bush suggested in his testimony to the lbwer Com- mission. But Israeli strikes against terrorists provided a model of direct confrontation through means that bypass traditional diplomatic and legal channels. This, he wrote, inspired an ad- ministration that was grappl- ing for ways to live up to its anti-terrorist campaign talk. "Time and again," wrote Straus, "the Israelis, seem- ingly against all odds, have outwitted and outfought their adversaries. And they have achieved their ends with a New York (JTA) — A Soviet Jewish refusenik ended her 24-day hunger strike last week, three days after 30 Moscow Jews held a one-day fast to protest state-sponsored anti-Semitism. Anna Kholmiansky of Moscow, 27, concluded her marathon fast after her father, Yakov Yerukhimovich, provided the long-sought con- sent to' allow her to apply to emigrate, according to the Coalition to Free Soviet Jews. Meanwhile, when the Soviets celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, the 30 Moscow Jews staged their own hunger strike. Stephen Solender, executive vice president of the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of New York, learned of the strike during a telephone con- versation with refusenik Allya Zonis, whom he met last month in Moscow. Zonis, a refusenik since 1985, lost her job as a com- puter programmer when she applied for a visa. She now works as a cleaning woman and heads a group of refuse- niks who are unable to emigrate because of lack of consent by parents. Coin- ed "pleather," this new substance boasts the at- tributes of both plastic and leather, and its potential ap- plications range from lifesav- ing biomedical devices to stylish leather-like garments and shoes.
