Columbia Professors
In Terrorist Circles

MORRIS J. AMITAY

C

olumbia University in
New York City, with
its excellent academic
reputation and diverse
departments, has always at-
tracted a disproportionately
large number of Jewish
students and teachers com-
pared to the other Ivy League
schools. That is why it is so
ironic that two of the most
outspoken and influential
pro-PLO propagandists in
this country are on its facul-
ty — and also on the PLO's
Palestine National Council.
Edward Said, the more
senior of the two, has been a
professor of English and com-
parative literature for many
years at Columbia. Associate
professor Rashid Khalidi has
taught Middle East history
there for only two years.
No one should dispute the
right of these two educators to
make their views known. But
for the same reasons there is
a growing outcry in the U.S.
Congress and elsewhere to
close the PLO offices in
Washington — so is there am-
ple justification to question
the wisdom of so respected an
institute of learning being so
closely associated with two
active members of a terrorist
organization seeking the
destruction of an ally of the
United States.
Said has rarely missed op-
portunities to defend con-
victed terrorists fighting ex-
tradition to Israel.
In a nationally televised ap-
pearance in 1985, Said denied
that the PLO practiced ter-
rorism and charged Israel
with being an "apartheid
regime." Previously, he charg-
ed that Israel pursued a
policy of "extermination" in
Lebanon.
He has travelled all over the
country sowing disinforma-
tion and divisiveness on col-
lege campuses. Only last
month at UCLA, Said spoke
of the "Israelization of U.S.
policy" and, according to
eyewitnesses, his remarks in-
flamed his .audience against
Jewish students there. Said
regularly finds time to ad-
dress such virulently anti-
Israel groups as the Arab-
American University
Graduates, the American-
Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee and the Palestine
Human Rights Campaign.

One wonders how, with
such a busy schedule of at-
tacking Israel and singing
the praises of Yassir Arafat,
Said finds time for English

and comparative literature.
In fact, Said has admitted he
spends "about half" of his
time on political activism.
Rashid Khalidi, who wrote
Under Siege: PLO Decision
Making During the 1982 War,
also taught at the American
University in Beirut for six
years. The good news is that
it has been reported he is
moving to the University . of
Chicago. It is questionable
whether or not he will help
raise the academic standards
of this university, since his
book was described in the
Wall Street Journal as "pro-

paganda parading as scholar-
ship. Its purpose seems to be
to improve the image of a ter-
rorist organization." The
same review concluded that
"it is sad to see the Columbia
University Press allowing its
name and reputation to be ex-
ploited for such ends."
For many Columbia alum-
ni, including this writer, it is
even more sad to see Colum-
bia's fine name continuing to
be associated with Prof. Ed-
ward Said's anti-Israel
diatribes. Acknowledging
that this may be a price we
have to pay as Americans to
ensure freedom of speech — it
is fair to ask whether Colum-
bia University might be able
to find a professor of English
who travels in literary, rather
than terrorist circles.

North Border
Incidents Down

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel
Defense Forces appear to have
the situation along Israel's
northern border well in hand
and the number of border
crossings has been increased
to facilitate the movement of
hundreds of Lebanese
villagers who commute to
jobs in Israel every day.
According to a senior IDF
officer, quoted by Davar Oct.
28, there has been a signifi-
cant decrease in recent
months of the number of in-
cidents.
