hey flew in patched
up planes, made their
own bomb racks,
mounted guns on 2x4s and
pipes, sailed in ships that
swished the waters with
prayers, shot with guns that
saw better days, etc.
These were the fellows
honored as "special in-
dividuals who some 40 years
ago, volunteered to help the
fledgling Jewish State of
Israel fight off the assault of
seven Arab armies in the
evacuation of the remnant of
European Jewry to Palestine
in defiance of a British
blocade. A heroic action."
Irivng Laker, honorary
chairman, considered it "a
rare privilege to have the
honor of introducing them"
onstage at recent Balfour
Concert, attended by a sold-
out audience of about 2,800
people.
To paraphrase Winston
Churchill, "never have so
many asked so much of so
few."
Over 2,000 U.S. Jews and
non-Jews volunteered for ser-
vice . . . More than 200 never
made it back home.
Those former Israeli ser-
vicemen on stage who saluted
the flag of Israel during play-
ing of "Hatikvah" were .. .
Capt. Ben Fingerood, elec-
trical engineer in charge of
keeping flying the most unor-
thodox and improbable air-
force in the world. . . . Jaffe
planes, Messerschmitts,
American-made Constella-
tions, German Stukas,
British Spitfires, etc. .. .
Capt. Jules Doneson, com-
mander of an infantry attack
company . . . Capt. Leo Ma-
jzels, B-17 flight engineer
developing new systems .. .
Alex Nemoff, engineer, etc.
aboard the ship Hatikvah .. .
Harry Weinsaft, security of-
ficer aboard the Exodus .. .
Lt. David Fink, gunner on
B-17 with 69th Squadron.
Not there included Major
Rudy Newman, in Europe,
radioman; flight pilot,
navigator, etc. . . . Col. Chuck
Crudgington, in northern
part of Michigan, a colonel
also in U.S. air force and a
fighter pilot in Israeli army
. . . Dr. Eugene Plous, a flight
surgeon, in Europe at time of
the honoring ceremonies.

fine voice and ability to pick
up a song she did with au-
dience participation.
First-time pre-affair in or-
chestra Lounge at Ford
Auditorium . . . With Mack
Pitt Trio . . . then the concert
and Mack's excellent 14-piece
orchestra in overture while a
lot of folks were still getting
to their seats . . . Mack on the
clarinet is a standout . . . Co-
chairperson Lillian Kaufman
a Zionist Organization
"trouble-shooter" . . . When
anything needed to be done,
it's Lillian to the call . . . Hub-
by Judge Ira Kaufman was
ZOA prez seven years . . .
Anne Silver and Dr. I. Walter
Silver with birthdays both in
November and will celebrate
48th aniversary in June .. .
Daughter Johanna Gordon
and son Dr. Daniel Silver sur-
