Pollards Are Being
Mistreated, Says Family

STAFF REPORT

The family of convicted spy
Jonathan Jay Pollard believes
that he and his wife, Anne
Henderson-Pollard, are being
seriously mistreated in prison
and that she is in danger of
dying.
Carol Pollard, Jonathan's
sister, told The Jewish News
this week that her brother,
serving a life sentence for his
role in spying on the U.S. for
Israel, is confined to a
psychiatric ward in the
Springfield, Missouri prison
where he has been held for 20
months, although he is men-
tally sound. "He wears ear-
phones and listens to music to
maintain his sanity," said
Carol Pollard, an artist who
works as an administrative
secretary at a hospital in New
Haven, Connecticut. "The ex-
perience, though, has made
him mentally stronger and
more focused. But he is very
worried about Anne."
Mrs. Henderson-Pollard,
serving a five year sentence
at a federal prison in Lex-
ington, Kentucky, suffers
from a rare stomach disorder,
diagnosed in only 50 people in
the world. She is unable to
eat solid food, is bent over in
constant pain, and her weight
is down to 85 pounds from her
normal 150. Prison authori-
ties have not permitted her to
receive a European drug that
reportedly relieves pain in
such cases because the drug
has not been approved in the
U.S.

Pollard's sister, who has
visited both Jonathan and
Anne several times this year,
said that Amnesty Interna-
tional is now taking up Mrs.
Henderson-Pollard's cause on
humanitarian grounds.
Carol Pollard said that she
and her parents blame Secre-
tary of Defense Caspar
Weinberger for the harsh
treatment the husband-and-
wife prisoners have received.
"Weinberger wanted the
death sentence for Jonathan
and swore that he won't be
released as long as he
[Weinberger] remains in of-
fice," said Miss Pollard. "He is
convinced that my brother
knows of another Pollard in
the system, but there is none."
She is hopeful that
Weinberger's resignation
could help lead to an easing
of her brother's plight.
Miss Pollard is bitter about
the lack of support for her
brother among American
Jews, whom she described as

"like an ostrich, with their
heads in the sand." She said
that a group of supporters,
Citizens for Pollard, has found
more support from the Jews of
Israel and Europe. "Here, it's
total fear," she said, adding
that American Jews owe it to
themselves to learn more
about the case.
Despite being "sold out" by
the Israelis, Jonathan Pollard

is not bitter about how he was
treated and still hopes to set-
tle in Israel someday, his
sister said. "He is at peace
with himself. He told me that
when he closes his eyes at
night, he is with Anne and in
Israel?'
