Farmer Jack Is Sued
Over Kosher Contracts

The Metropolitan Kashrut
Council of Michigan has filed
suit in Wayne County Circuit
Court against Borman Foods,
the parent company of
Farmer Jack supermarkets,
accusing Borman's of attemp-
ting to destroy the Council's
business.
The supermarket chain
changed kosher councils last
spring, transferring their
kashrut supervision from the
Kashrut Council to the Coun-
cil of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit. This move,
according to Kashrut Council
attorney, Akiva Goldman, son
of Council director Rabbi
Jack Goldman, forced many
companies that distribute to
Farmer Jack stores to cancel
their kosher contracts with
the Kashrut Council.
Last spring, Borman Foods
president Paul Borman heard
the council had begun work-
ing for A & P supermarkets
and immediately terminated
their services, Rabbi
Goldman told The Jewish
News.
Borman Foods declined
comment.

Prior to the breakup with
Borman's, the Kashrut Coun-
cil provided kosher certifica-
tion to Sawyer Fruit and
Vegetable Coop, Speas Apple
Juice Company, Farm Maid
house brands and Wesley's
Quaker Maid Ice Cream Com-
pany.
Borman Foods operates 84
Farmer Jack supermarkets in
Michigan and Ohio. The
Council is suing Borman
Foods for more than $10,000
in punitive and exemplary
damages.
