Referring to a front page story in Tues- day's Detroit News, focusing on the "Bess Mess" rather than the "Bess Book," Margolis added, "We wouldn't have had to worry about reporters doing front page stories like that." Dworkin, Margolis and Myerson met privately with The Jewish News Tuesday, musing on the history of the `30s and '40s and the dif- ferences between the America that proclaimed Bess "Miss" and the America now, in which her book appeared. All three women are hopeful that it will turn into a major mo- tion picture. "I would like it to be a movie," said Myerson. The script has already been written. With coiffed hair, large silver earrings, and a black and white suit trimmed in red, the five-foot-ten brunette still measures somewhere near 35-25-35. The only dif- ference, she quips, "I now get senior citizen discounts." As always, Myerson measures each word careful- ly, perhaps more so than ever before. Like any good grand- mother, she proudly displays a picture of her precious blond grandchild, Samantha, 5, who lives in Los Angeles with Myerson's daughter, Barra, and son-in-law, Brian Reilly. (Myerson lovingly refers to her granddaughter by her • Hebrew name "Rivka Reilly.") As for the intermarriage: "Times change," said Myer- son. "Things happen that you begin to accept. There's a coming, going and returning all through our lives." For Miss America, 1945, there have been many dif- ficult times, having survived polio, cancer, two tumultuous marriages, a mild stroke, a failed 1980 bid for the U.S. Senate and now the charges of "serious misconduct" in public office. In spite of the difficulties, Myerson still stands tall. She has let go of the low profile she held on to for the last few months and, encouraged by the warm reception in Detroit, is off plugging her book in city after city. "It was tremen- dous," she said of her time here. "So comforting."
