The book made its of- ficial debut at the Book Fair, selling out the 400 copies available in less than 15 minutes. Obviously, the audience couldn't get enough. "The good things override the bad," said Ruth Binder, who sat teary-eyed in the au- dience as Myerson spoke. "It all came from the heart?' "She was so good, I cried," said Bebe Mandell, who's husband added, "(The scandal) wasn't our business." Myerson and Dworkin were overwhelmed. "We didn't expect this," they said, after signing nearly every single book they sold. Publisher Margolis, who raised several eyebrows after her decision to go ahead with the printing of 35,000 copies of the book even after Myer- son's crown was tarnished, is overjoyed by the book's success. In terms of sales, the recent scandals don't seem to be hur- ting anything. But Myerson, Dworkin and Margolis all in- sist the book would have done just as well without all the bad wrap, thank you. "We have a hit," rejoiced Myerson, reflecting on the standing ovation the Book Fair crowd gave her and Dworkin. "We have a long- standing hit." Margolis admits the "Bess Mess" highlights the book but also "disrupts the flow?' Several communities where Myerson was scheduled to speak are now cautious to the point of cancellation."If it had not happened," said Margolis, "it would have been harder for me as the publisher and it would have been easier for me EARLY DEADLINES The Jewish News will have special deadlines for its November 27 issue and special holiday gift guide because of the Thanksgiv- ing holiday.
