FRIDAY. NOV. 13. 1987

To help Detroit launch the
1988 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign on Dec. 10, Elie Wiesel
will pay his first visit here
since receiving the Nobel
Peace Prize.
Allied Jewish Campaign
contributors of $2,500 and
over are invited to meet and
hear Wiesel at a cocktail buf-
fet, 7 p.m. Dec. 10, at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
A dessert reception with
Wiesel will follow his
remarks.
In anticipation of the
meeting, Campaign
volunteers are soliciting as
many prospects as possible
and assure a successful turn-
out. There will be no solicita-
tion at the meeting.
Recipient of the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1986, Weisel
has gained universal recogni-
tion for his humanitarian ef-
forts and outstanding con-
tributions to world literature
and human rights.
Described as an "author,
philosopher, teacher and
teller of tales," Wiesel holds
more than 40 honorary doc-
torates and has received, in
addition to the Nobel Prize,
more than 70 awards from
throughout the world.
Wiesel has led many
humanitarian organizations,
including the chairmanship
of the United States Holo-
caust Memorial Council. A
professor of Jewish Studies at
City College of New York, he
has written 25 books.
The Campaign is currently
running more than $1 million
ahead of last year's pace
following meetings at the
$25,000 and $10,000 levels,
and the leadership "Fisher
Meeting."

Jane and Larry Sherman
will host members of the
Young Adult Division $1,000
section at a meeting on behalf
of the 1988 Allied Jewish
Campaign on Nov. 24. The
meeting will begin with
cocktails at 7:30 p.m. Jane
Sherman is chairman of the
1988 Campaign. A former
Campaign vice chairman, she
is a member of Federation's
Board of Governors.
Richard Broder and Brian
E. Kepes are chairmen of the
event. Michael Gorge, Judith
Sklar, David Victor and
Nathan Upfal are associate
chairmen. Dennis S. Bernard
and Lisa Sommers are YAD
Campaign chairmen, and
Norman H. Beitner is presi-
dent of the division.

Community Joins
For Havdalah

An outdoor Havdalah and a
chance to stargaze will
highlight an activity for the
entire family 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch of the Jewish Com-
munity Center. Beginning
with Havdalah outdoors, the
evening will be followed by
the opportunity to look
through telescopes. Dr.
William Beres of Wayne State
University and Norbert
Vance of Akiva Hebrew Day
School will be on hand to give
families a tour of the stars. In-
side men can learn Israeli
dancing with Uri Segal and
women can learn with Sonny
Lipenholtz. A pre-school
music specialist, Lillian
Freedland, will lead a family
sing-along in the Center
atrium.
