Vandals Arrested
In Shul Defacing

New York (JTA) — Rabbi
Philip Fleischer of Temple
Beth Shalom in Mahopac,
N.Y is satisfied that two local
juveniles taken into custody
by the police last week are the
vandals responsible for defac-
ing his 230-family Conser-
vative synagogue with
swastikas and anti-Semitic
graffiti in three separate
incidents.
The two, Andrei Fedoroff,
16, the son of a Russian Or-
thodox priest, and a 12-year-
old friend, not identified
because of his age, were ar-
rested by Sgt. Gerald
Schramek of the Carmel, N.Y.
police department. He caught
them in the act of spray-
painting swastikas and "Heil
Hitler" on the synagogue
walls.
Fedoroff,a high-school
dropout who lives with his
parents at a Russian monas-
tery about a mile from Tem-
ple Beth Shalom, was charg-
ed with three counts of ag-
gravated harassment and
three counts of criminal
mischief. He was held in Put-
nam County Jail in lieu of
$10,000 bail. His companion
was charged with juvenile
delinquency and released in
the custody of his parents.

SLA Halts
Captive Release

Tel Aviv (JTA) — South
Lebanon Army (SLA) com-
mander General Antoine
Lahad said last week he has
halted the release of prisoners
held by the SLA at the El
Khiyam detention camp in
south Lebanon.
He intends to use them as
bargaining chips in negotia-
tions with the Amal and
other militias for the release
of an Israeli Air Force
navigator and SLA militia-
men held prisoner.
But, he added at a press
conference in Metulla, he was
skeptical about success of the
negotiations, because the
other parties were prevented
by "foreign powers" from
making independent deci-
sions.
Those "foreign powers" ap-
pear to be Syria and Iran.
More than 250 Arabs are
currently held at El Khiyam,
suspected or found guilty of
terrorist acts against the SLA
and the Israel Defense Force.
Some of them have been
released on humanitarian
grounds.
