lived these ideals and led
others toward them.
Bayard Rustin participated
in the 1947 "Freedom Ride"
protesting segregated public
accommodations. He
peacefully demonstrated the
injustices of the time and
worked side by side with Mar-
tin Luther King in building
the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference. He
worked closely with the
Jewish community and
helped forge our historical
alliance.
Another quote particularly
fitting for us today: "I admit,"
wrote Rustin, "that most like-
ly we will not achieve such
equality next month, or next
year, or even in this decade.

calendar refers to Jewish
holidays this year as simply
"No University Exercises." In
previous years the calendars
stated the names of Jewish
holidays. Third, the
homecoming dance this year
was scheduled on a Friday
night and just a few hours
after the end of Simchat
Torah. Thus, observant
Jewish students were not able
to attend. Fourth, the annual
Founders' Day celebration
was held on a Saturday after-
noon for the first time. As a
result, some of the founders of
this university were not able
to attend an event held sup-
posedly in their honor. Fifth,
the budget of the Near
Eastern and Judaic studies
department, perhaps the
finest of its kind in the coun-
try, is being cut, and it may
soon be renamed the Near
Eastern studies department.
Sixth, the admissions office
uses false advertising,
through its deceptive
literature and its active
public relations workers, to
deny "rumors of Brandeis'
Jewishness" to prospective
freshmen. All this is happen-
ing at America's only Jewish-
sponsored nonsectarian
university

O

But it is a goal we must hold
ever before us, even in the
darkest of times; as it not on-
ly confers dignity upon our
sstruggle, but it should in-
dicate to us how we must act
toward one another today if
we are to preserve for tomor-
row the possibility of a just
society."

We will miss you, Rabbi
Rustin, your energy, your
commitment, your tutelage,
your leadership and your own
dreams. But I hope, standing
here at the foot of Abraham
Lincoln, the very site of your
1963 march, that we will live
up to your example and help
move us closer in our long
journey to that just society.

The article "Traditional,
Modern Views Clash Over
Reproduction" (Nov. 6), while
a very thorough discussion of
the recent panel discussion of
reproductive rights in Jewish
tradition and law, omitted a
key fact about the program.
The entire program came
about as the result of the

planning of several organiza-
tions in the community.
Jewish News readers cer-
tainly ought to know the
views of the panelists, as set
forth in the article. They also
need to be informed of the
organizations whose efforts
and contributions made the
program possible: the Jewish
Community Council, New
Jewish Agenda, Midrasha
College of Jewish Studies and
the Jewish Law Students
Association of the University
of Detroit. We also wish to ex-
press appreciation to the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit for their
assistance in arranging the
program.

Superficial View
Of Christianity

In response to the letter
"Recognizing the Messiah"
(Oct. 30), as a former Chris-
tian cleric, now a convert to
Judaism, I find (Alan Rosen-
thal's) approach to Christian
dogma to be somewhat super-
ficial and lacking in
substance.
May I suggest that (he) pay
a visit to a competent rabbi,
and with an open mind and
heart, (he) may once again
come to the realization that
Jesus, messiah, human-god is
not in any way the promised
redeemer, king of Israel .
