for eight years now. Another
fair worker, Joyce Burkhoff,
claims 23 years. One of the
Book Fair founders, Pauline
Jackson, 91, finally had to
drop out the year before last,
but still attends the book fair.)
"Besides the fact that we're
doing important work by pro-
moting literacy and our own
heritage," Cantor said, "the
best part is that you make
friends here. We call ourselves
`book fair friends," and we
may not get together at any
other time, but we're fast
friends and I wouldn't
hesitate to call on any one of
them if I had trouble. At the
same time, I'd come running
if they needed me. I think it's
that special kind of friendship
that makes any volunteer ef-
fort work — and what keeps
us coming back year after
year."
The book fair, as always, is
free to the public. Luncheons
are $7 and require reserva-
tions. Admission fees vary for
the two children's perfor-
mances and for Yiddish
Theater Night. For a $100
contribution, fairgoers can at-
tend a reception in honor of
St. John. Patrons also receive
an autographed copy of St.
John's book, along with an in-
scribed bookmark, reserved
seats and recognition on the
lobby patron's board.
There is an infrared sound
system available for the
hearing-impaired, as well as
signing interpreters for the
programs with Robert St.
John, Amos Perlmuter (The
Life and Times of Menachem
Begin), and Rabbi Marc Angel
(The Orphaned Adult). ❑

HMC Extends
Visiting Hours

The Holocaust Memorial
Center will have extended
hours during the period of the
Jewish Book Fair, Nov. 8-13.
The HMC will open at 10
a.m. each day, the doors will
close at 7:30 p.m. Docent
tours for groups of ten or more
may be scheduled by calling
Pat Bircoll, 661-0840. Public
tours (no reservations
necessary) are given on Sun-
days at 1 and 2:30 p.m. and on
Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Tour participants will have
the opportunity to meet with
a Holocaust survivor who will
relate his/her personal ex-
perience and answer
questions.
There is no admission
charge, and the building is
wheelchair accesable.
