The book recounts Orens-
tein's experiences throughout
the war — and more especial-
ly near the end, when the
frantic Germans recruited the
few Jewish "superbrains" left
in the camps to come up with
a method for turning the in-
evitable tide. Orenstein posed
as a mathematician and
became a member of the
`Chemiker Kommando." All
proceeds from I Shall Live are
earmarked for the Anti-
Defamation League. "His
reasons for that are simple,"
Silver said, "He wanted to
fight bigotry, and now he's in
a position to do that."
Appearances later in the
week include former jour-
nalist Stuart Kahan, now
managing editor at McGraw-
Hill Publishers, and nephew
of Lazar Moiseyevich
Kaganovich, called the Soviet
Union's Architect of Fear dur-
ing Stalin's reign of terror.
The Wolf of the Kremlin is a
biographical novel describing
Kaganovich's role in the
deaths of some 20 million peo-
ple, and is the first book to be
written about him.
And, in an astonishing
coming-together of two
diametrically opposed views
on U.S. Middle East policy,
Hyman Bookbinder, a Jew,
and James Abourezk, an
Arab, "hash it out" in their
book, Through Different Eyes.
In a combination of posi-
tion statements and tran-
scripts of face-to-face de-
bates, the unlikely duo pre-
sent an uncompromising
debate-in-print.
In The Rescue, Ruth
Gruber, author of the best-
selling Israel on the Seventh
Day, and the only American
correspondent allowed to
witness the 1984 rescue mis-
sion, Operation Moses,
describes the secret rescue of
thousands of isolated black
Jews from Ethiopia, and their
assimilation into Israel.
On a lighter note, Anne
Roiphe (Up the Sandbox), self-
described as "a feminist who
believes in family life, a Uto-
pian- who doesn't believe in
Utopias, and a pacifist who
believes in self-defense," does
her wise and funny thing in

Lovingkindness.

Raskin's answer to turning
50, and Raising Your Child to
be a Mensch is Rabbi Neil
Kurshan's answer to paren-
ting in the "me first' 80s.
Gloria Goldreich, author of
Leah's Journey and Leah's
Children, has written a new
family saga, West to Eden,
and will be on hand to talk
about it.
Interfaith marraiges are
the topic in Paul and Rachel
Cowan's book, Mixed Bless-

ings. The Cowans draw on
their own experiences, and on
history, literature, and inter-
views with 300 couples and
adult children of interfaith
marriages.
For the kids, on Sunday,
author-performer Peninnah
Schram retells Jewish Stories

One Generation Tells Another.

The following Sunday, singer-
songwriter Elaine Serling
helps the children Sing and
Celebrate their Jewish
heritage. There is an admis-
sion charge for these two
performances.

25,000 are
expected to attend
the eight days of
speakers and book
sales.

Also for the kids, Jeffrey
Shandler translates Mani-
Leib's classic, Yingl, Tvingl
and Khvat from Yiddish.
Silver says if there is a
"highlight" to the Book Fair,
it would be the annual
English-Yiddish Theater
Night. "Shosanna Ron and
Ruth Devorah (A Concert of
Jewish Humor and Song) are
wonderful," Silver says, "and
people love it because it's one
of the few times Yiddish
theater comes to the city."
Some 66 Jewish organiza-
tions co-sponsor the book fair
and it's speakers. "Without
them," Silver says, "and
without our volunteers, we
might as well close the doors.
But we've never had to worry.
This is an important event for
the whole community, and
everyone wants to keep it go-
ing."
From a 37-member Book
Fair committee headed by co-
chairs Nina Schneyer and
Donna Sklar, to a 52-member
steering committee peppered
with past book fair chairmen,
the volunteer efforts, Silver
says, are formidable. She
estimates that by the week
before the book fair some 250
volunteers will have been in-
volved or will have signed on
to be a part of the nine-day
fair.
"You just can't say enough
about the volunteers," says
Silver, one of only two paid
staff (the other is Esther
Tuchklaper, Silver's assis-
tant). "They help with
everything from placing book
orders to reviewing books to
inventorying to selecting
speakers to manning the
tables on book fair days. They
do the scut-work as much as
the fun work."
