PERFORMANCE CAR, November 1986*

The new breed Jaguar XJ6 sedan moves
swiftly and surely.
With unique "pendulum" isolation, its
fully independent suspension tunes out
road imperfections without turning
spongy. It achieves a near perfect balance
of agile handling and supple ride.
Its new double overhead cam six cylin-
der engine, with 24 valves, provides
authoritative response and extraordinary
high speed capabilities. Yet its serenely
silent cabin surrounds the driver and pas-

should have alternatives. We
have to commit ourselves as
a community to wanting
children. The situation for
Judaism is not the same as
the situation for individual
Jews. There must be open op-
tions for free decisions."
Another aspect of having
children that has become an
issue in modern society is the
fact that many women want
children but cannot find
mates.
"There are women who
want a child, and could have
one through artificial in-
semination," Frymer-Kensky
said. "Do we limit these
bonds to a traditional family?
What do we say to people who
are not married but who do
not want to be celibate? There
are ways to separate procrea-
tion, sexuality and marriage."
Prof. Sedler took a similar
stance. A Reform Jew, he does
not believe in the divinity of
Jewish law, but thinks it pro-
vides values and guidance in
the modern world.
"In today's world, sex is not
limited to marriage, but
Jewish values should be ap-
plied to sexual relations,"
Sedler said. "Sex should be
part of a loving relationship.
It should not be explotive,
abusive or promiscuous."
Jewish values assume that
parenthood will take place
within marriage, and if a
Jewish person chooses to
engage in sex without mar-
riage, contraceptives are man-
datory, Sedler said. Within
marriage, pregnancy should
be avoided if the health of the
woman is an issue, allowing
both contraceptives and
abortion.
"There is a concept of

respect for women," Sedler
said. "Her pain comes first. To
contemporary Judaism, con-
traception is acceptable when
parents do not want children,
when the quality of life will
be enriched by limiting the
size of families. Marriage is a
mitzvah, sex between hus-
band and wife is a mitzvah,
and marriage is no less valid
without children. No woman
is required to build the world
by destroying herself?'
Another issue which crosses
the lines of traditional and
modern thinking is the use of
condoms to help stem the
AIDS crisis.
According to Rabbi Meilech
Silberberg, condoms may not
be used under Jewish law.
"In Judaism, there is one
severe prohibition," Rabbi
Silberberg said. "That is the
wasting of seminal seed. This
sin is more severe than any
other in the Torah. Because of
this, homosexuality is a
capital offense. Also for this
reason, condoms are strictly
prohibited."
But Prof. Tikvah Frymer-
Kensky believes that using
condoms to fight AIDS is an
issue separate from
contraception.
"Condoms are not accepted
because sex normally means
depositing of sperm in the
vagina, and anything that in-
terferes with that is not ap-
proved," she said. "But there
is room to change on this
point. In the case of a hazard,
such as AIDS, the intent to
avoid harm is an additional
factor in our thinking. It's a
technical issue that has been
re-opened as condoms are now
being used as a barrier to a
virus."

ashington — The
White House ac-
knowledged this
week that Judge Douglas
Ginsburg's religion was a fac-
tor in his nomination to the
Supreme Court, but Jewish
organizations and leaders are
divided over just how that fac-
tor will play out. Many felt it
was a shrewd move on the
part of the Administration to
choose a conservative nom-
inee who was Jewish as a
means of diffusing opposition
among Jewish groups, many
of whom opposed the nomina-
tion of Robert Bork. "Of
course this is a 'Jewish

strategy,' " said veteran
political scientist Amos
Perlmutter. "Anyone who sug-
gests otherwise doesn't
understand American poli-
tics. If I were Ronald Reagan,
and determined to leave my
conservative legacy on the
Court, I'd do the same thing."
The Jewish angle, Perlmut-
ter said, won't cause a
stampede in favor of the con-
servative nominee. But it
might minimize organized
Jewish resistance — and
cause second thoughts among
senators like Joe Biden (D-
De) and Alan Cranston (D-C)
who enjoy strong Jewish sup-
port. "It is a very subterra-
nean tactic," he said. "There's
