Steven will twin his bar mitzvah with Roma Avadiaiev of Kafkaza, Der- bent, USSR. Roma's father, Kiin, applied and was refus- ed emigration to Israel in January 1975. The Avadiaiev family consists of mother, father and grandmother and besides Roma, four other children. They are among the Tat ("mountain") Jews living in the Caspian seaport of Der- bent. The community has lodged a special joint protest over the local policy of refus- ing exit visas to reunite with close relatives in Israel. Avadiaiev's sister has been in Israel for nine years and longs for her mother and brother's family to be with her. Steven has written several times to Roma and the con- gregation will honor the Soviet youngster in absentia during the bar mitzvah service. im•H NEWS 1'1"mm Please Pass The Bananas Not only is man's closest relative the chimpanzee, but the chimpanzee's closest relative is man, according to new evidence collected by a Wayne State University/Up- John Co. research team. Dr. Morris Goodman, pro- fessor of anatomy at Wayne State, announced evidence last year that pointed to a three-way evolutionary split between man, chimp and gorilla. According to the research, humans and chimpanzees are only 1.6 percent different genetically, while chimps and gorillas • are 2.1 percent dif- ferent. The research also shows that gorillas branched off the human evolutionary tree about 5.5 million years ago, while chimps diverged about 5 million years ago. Immigrant Law Washington An American Jewish Committee immigration expert told Con- gress that a new proposed law on immigration would have the positive effect of letting new peple into the U.S., but needs to be changed to avoid ethnic conflicts, preserve the right of Americans to bring close relatives to this country, and maintain ethnic pluralism.
