a nice restaurant near the
airport. Once, a half dozen
planes flew to Charlevoix
where one of our members
has a condo, and we raided his
refrigerator, had brunch and
schmoozed."
Chai Flyers puts out a mon-
thly newsletter and has a
small library with books and
magazines on flying safety
and proficiency. While the
group has a legal constitu-
tion, the organization is very
loose knit. Meetings
sometimes feature a guest
lecturer on safety, federal
rules and regulations on
airplanes, on the weather or
the care and feeding of
engines. Sometimes they will
center around food.

"Often, we'll meet for
breakfast and decide where to
fly for lunch," said David
Schwartz, a past president.
Although several members
have taken extended trips
with one another, most club
trips are to and from their
destination in the same day.
Schwartz, who has always
liked planes, started out fly-
ing rubber band models at
age five, then moved on to
gas-powered radio-controlled
models and then airplanes. A
now defunct model airfield
was named after him.
The group is now close and
friendly enough, Schwartz
said, that if a member makes
a flying faux pas they will
talk about it at a meeting. "It
will be a jumping off point for
a safety discussion, and we'll
pick it all apart," he said.
"People have made good
friends and partners in our
group. We've ended up with a
couple of partnerships in own-
ing planes. It's nice to own a
plane with a fellow Jew. Some
people who couldn't swing it
alone (to buy a plane) have
teamed up with a compatible
personality and been able to
do that."
Plane ownership isn't a
criterion for membership in
the Chai Flyers.. Some
members own, some share,
and some rent. The group has
one female member, Susan
Siporin, and one members
who has flown in Israel.
"Murray Grossman had an
ambition to fly in Israel," said
