presidency of the Council of
Jewish Federations to be
assumed next month by
Mandel Berman spell out a
continuity of service which
led to national leadership for
the two being honored.
The Brandeis Award, to be
presented to Judge Cohn at
the annual Balfour event of
the Zionist Organization of
Detroit, assumes special
significance in the judicial
position of the honoree. Judge
Cohn has a record of presiden-
cies in the Detroit Jewish
Welfare Federation and the
local chapter of the American
Jewish Committee. There is
much more, first as a lawyer
and now in his judicial post.
He always evidences scholar-
ship. He is a devoted student
of the law and the judiciary
and he is devoted to the needs
of attaining knowledge of the
causes which he has served
well in behalf of Jewry, Israel,
Zionism and the American in-
volvements on local and na-
tional scales.
The Zionist movement adds
glory to its activities by ad-
ding Judge Cohn to the list of
distinguished awardees of the
Brandeis honor. We now have
cause to say that a
distinguished student of the
judicial record of Supreme
Court Justice Louis D.
Brandeis now has his name
added to the cherished list.
There is much to be said in
commending selection of
Mandel Berman for the CJF
presidency. His identification
with the synagogue as a
leader of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, on the local
scene in the Jewish Welfare
Federation, and nationally as
president of American
Association for Jewish Educa-
tion and now as CJF presi-
dent, assumes global impor-
tance and lends recognition
and stature.
In the CJF, Bill Berman has
already been a planner of ac-
tions in many spheres affec-
ting major concerns. Present-
ly, in the planning of the
demographic study of
American Jewry, he adds new
gifts to the national needs.
A number of years ago, Ber-
man had aided Jewish school
systems. He indicated then,
and continues to do so now,
that the educational com-
mitments must have priority
in Jewish communal
planning.
It is important to note that
Bill has two Detroit
predecessors in CJF presiden-
cies — Max M. Fisher and
Martin Citrin. Fisher's
leadership lent inerasable
precedents for the cause. It
was during his presidency
that dietary laws became
commitments at CJF ban-

quets. It was at the presiden-
tial dinner over which he
presided that a militant
young group demanded that
Max M. Fisher, as CJF presi-
dent, call up Elie Wiesel, now
a Nobel Laureate, to lead in
the Benshing. It is now an
established element in
religious commitments at
CJF functions, and credit
goes to Max Fisher.
Such is a Detroit record to
be proud of. The current roles
in our communal structures,
with honors for Detroiters
Cohn and Berman, add to
prestige for Detroiters in the
two spheres whence come the
new honors for our fellow
citizens.
