SYNAGOGUES SZ Begins Adult Ed Schedule of Classes Cong. Shaarey Zedek's In- stitute for Adult Jewish Studies has announced its new lineup of courses. The adult education committee is co-chaired by Dr. Mark Goldberg and Sharon Brown, who announced that it will again offer Alef Bet classes for adults who wish to learn to read Hebrew, follow the Sabbath service and recite some of the familiar prayers. Shaarey Zedek faculty for the Institute for Adult Jewish Studies includes: Rabbi Irwin Groner, Rabbi William Ger- shon, Cantor Chaim Najman and Marvin Kasoff. The guest faculty includes: Dr. Sidney Bolkosky, a professor of Jewish history at the Univer- sity of Michigan, Dearborn campus, and authority on Holocaust studies; Aliza Shevrin, a lecturer and teacher and an internation- ally-published translator of Yiddish literature; Aviva Silverman, who received her master's degree in Jewish education from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and has done exten- sive curriculum writing for Camp Ramah and the Melton in Center Research Jerusalem; and Itzy Weisberg, a Jewish composer and assis- tant professor in the Midrasha College of Jewish Studies. The courses will be taught on Tuesday evenings from this Tuesday through Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Courses include: "Judaism Confronts Ethical Issues," "The Power of the Niggun," "Teaching the Unteachable: Holocaust Education," "Par- shat Hashavua: Exploring the Weekly Torah Portion," "The Wisdom of the Sages," "Yiddish for Beginners and Advanced Beginners," "Passages," "Kabbalah: The Jewish Mystical Tradition," "Friday Night at Home: Celebrating Shabbat," "Legends of the Talmudic Masters," "Tutorial in Synagogue Skills," and "Yid- dish Literature in Transla- tion." There will be two sections offered for the Alef Bet series. One section includes nine Sundays starting this Sunday at 9 a.m. The other section consists of nine Tuesdays beginning this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Henry Auslander is the instructor for both sections. There is a fee. For informa- tion, call Shaarey Zedek, 357-5544. Emanu-EI Hosts Teacher Event Temple Emanu-El will host the annual Reform Teachers' Institute on Nov. 8. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Sandra Lyness, whose topic is "Where has Childhood Gone?" Following this talk nine mental health professionals (all Temple Emanu-El members) will facilitate workshops based on case studies. Topics include mixed marriages, blended families, single-parent families, substance abuse, divorce, sex- ual abuse, death, and child abuse.
