a roof and food," says
Feldman. "The concerted ef-
fort by many people to make
JARC a community
organization and its own
responsibility has enabled
JARC to grow and expand
to what it is today."
JARC is a non-profit, non-
sectarian organization. All
homes are kosher, another
concern of the first group of
parents, and Shabbat is
always observed. Each resi-
dent is either employed or
attends a sheltered
workshop or school, and
each participates in social
events and takes part in car-
ing for his home.
Initially, the Department
of Mental Health (DMH) in
Michigan did not help fund
JARC residential homes.
"However," says Keller,
"after the opening of our se-
cond home in 1978, DMH
observed the successful
operation of the home, the
community support, and
the fact that religion was
not a primary placing fac-
tor. A criteria had been
established that placed
clients of similar function-
ing levels together in one
home. At the time, DMH
had clients on its waiting
list that were also on
JARC's list. We combined
our efforts and funding was
received from DMH for the
third group home." JARC
continues to have a good
working relationship with
DMH today.
The state of Michigan has
done more to help its
developmentally disabled
people than most other
states, Keller says, and
JARC has tapped into all
the state has offered in the
way of funding, pilot pro-
grams and sensitizing the
public.
JARC's own major fundrais-
ing effort this year will be
held Nov. 18 at Ford
Auditorium. Its "Great Ger-
shwin Concert" will feature
Mel Torme, Leslie Uggams
and Peter Nero.
The hard work and deter-
mination of those first
parents have really paid off.
"Through the devotion of
many people and a lot of time,
these friendly children go
everywhere — bowling, the
movies, everywhere," says
Berlin. "All they ever wanted
was to be treated just like
other people."
It looks like they are get-
ting their wish.
