.1 Sidney A. Deitch DETROIT MONUMENT WORKS Bess Frankel Bess (Pessel) Frankel, a member of landsmanshaften during her residence in Detroit, died Oct. 26 in Lakewood, Calif. She was 85. Born in Sarnia, Russia, Mrs. Frankel came to Detroit in 1919. Prior to moving to California, Mrs. Frankel was a member of the Brisker Malwer Society and the Berditchev-Kesheneu- Zhitomir Aid Society. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Millie) Greenberg of Lakewood, Mrs. Scott (Rose) Thompson of Norco, Calif., and Mrs. Henry (Faye) Lybeck of Oak Park; five grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Interment Bur- bank, Calif. Ruth Edelson Ruth B. Edelson, former director of nursing at Sinai Hospital, died Oct. 21 at age 76. Born in Piqua, Ohio, Mrs. Edelson previously was direc- tor of nursing at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital prior to the completion of Sinai Hospital. Following graduation from the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing, she was a staff nurse with the health department for the city of Detroit, while completing re- quirements for her B.S. and nursing degrees at Wayne State University. She holds a master's degree from Teachers College at Columbia University, New York. Mrs. Edelson also was on the nursing faculty at Deaconess Hospital. In 1956, she was appointed principal of the Shapero School of Nur- sing, a position she held un- til 1972, when she was ap- pointed chairman of nursing at Sinai Hospital. She was president of the Wayne State University Nursing Alumni Association and the Southeastern Michigan League for Nursing. In addition, Mrs. Edelson was chairman of the nursing service administrators sec- tion of the nursing league. She was honored by the Coun- cil of Practical Nursing "for her distinguished service as a two-term chairman" and serv- ed on the board of review for practical nurse programs. She also was chairman of the Michigan Board of Nursing. She retired in 1977. After her retirement to Sinai, she served as a consul- tant to Borman Hall. She is survived by a son, H. James of Eagan, Minn.; a brother, Gerald E. Bruson of Coral Springs, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Helen Ungar; two grand- daughters; nieces and nephews. Henry Abrams Henry Abrams, who return- ed recently after four decades in architecture and engineer- ing here, died Oct. 23 at age 84. A 1928 graduate of the University of Michigan Col- lege of Engineering, he earn- ed the added degree in ar- chitecture in 1930 from the University of Michigan Col- lege of Architecture. For several years, he was associated here in an ar- chitectural firm with Louis Redstone, under the firm name of Redstone and Abrams. Mr. Abrams, who resided in North Miami Beach at the time of his death, leaves his wife, Ann; two brothers, Harry of Southfield and Philip; and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Davidson and Mrs. Helen Weisz. Meretsky Lillian Meretsky, the daughter of Windsor's first Jewish settlers, Aaron and Kathryn Meretsky, died Oct. 2 Mrs. Meretsky was a life member of Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue, Hadassah and B'nai B'rith. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Merton (Bar- bara) Bernstein of Windsor and Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Wolk of New York; six grand- children and five great-grandchildren.
