Stacey Waldman
Is Bat Mitzvah
Stacey Waldman will twin
the observance of her bat
mitzvah celebration with
Yona Royak, daughter of
Viacheslav and Irina of
Moldavian SSR, USSR, on
Saturday at 9 a.m. at Cong.
Beth Shalom.
Royak, known as "Slava,"
applied to emigrate to Israel
in 1976 together with his
wife, child, aunt and father-
in-law. All were refused exit
visas because of his alleged
"secret work" until 1972.
Since 1975, Royak has suf-
fered from diabetes and has
been unable to obtain proper
medication. He has been
repeatedly harassed at his
place of employment; threat-
ened with 71/2 years of con-
finement in a hospital accus-
ed of falsifying medical cer-
tificates; denied premiums
due him. When a notebook
with Hebrew writing was
found in his desk, it was seiz-
ed and used to threaten him
further. Later, Royak was forc-
ed to take the night shift, a
time slot from which
diabetics are usually excused.
Despite his suffering, Royak
found the courage to sign a
letter congratulating Israel
on its 30th anniversary. On
Jan. 27, 1980, his lecture on
"100 Years to the Revival of
Hebrew" was read at a
Jewish seminar in Kishinev.
