SHIPLER
DAVID
(moderator of the debate):
Where would the Palestinian
State be located?
ABOUREZK: In the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, which
is the only real territory left
for such a state in the Middle
East.
SHIPLER: So you've
answered Mr. Bookbinder's
question here about recogniz-
ing Israel's right to exist, it
seems to me.
ABOUREZK: Well, of
course, I said of course Israel
exists. Those are the very
words I used in . . . -
BOOKBINDER: He still
won't say "right to exist." You
really refuse to say that, don't
you?
ABOUREZK: Within
whatever boundaries, and
provided that you recognize
the Palestinians' right to ex-
ist . . . Let me just remind you
that I am not a nation, so it
doesn't do much good for me
to recognize Israel's right to
exist.
BOOKBINDER: But you

want me to create a state for
the Palestinians.
ABOUREZK: No, I want
you to let them decide for
themselves.
In other words: nothing but
words. Our speakers cannot
act because they have no
power to act. So they just talk
and talk and talk. And their
dull rhetorical exercises fuel
the conflict rather than
diminish it, because their
purpose is conflict, not
dialogue and conflict
resolution.

Book Fair organizers and
American Jewish Committee
co-sponsors don't believe that
any Jews will be persuaded by
Abourezk. If this is so, why
sponsor him in a debate? If we
already agree with
Bookbinder, why have him
debate? Is there really such a
painful dearth of writers and
speakers who can illuminate
genuine mysteries, who can
enlighten us and start us on
the path towards peace and
fulfillment, that we have to
buy the kind of pointless tripe
Abourezk and Bookbinder are
peddling?
Their appearance should be
cancelled. And if we must
hear a Jew and an Arab ex-
pound on the Arab-Israeli
dispute this year, let's invite
someone who can make a dif-
ference — Yitzhak Shamir
and Abu Nidal perhaps?

shivering and unanswered in
the kind of feeble exchange

the debate which hits at the
very heart of the matter:

Let's Ignore
Halloween

October 31st is fast ap-
proaching. Commonly this
day is celebrated by many
Jewish children along with
their families. Halloween is a
holiday that is promoted in
our public schools, and is
looked forward to with great
enthusiasm, especially by our
children.
In taking some time to
research this holiday, I found
it to be a Christian,
paganistic holiday, in which
some features are Devil's
Night, evil spirits, goblins,
witches and other satanic and
barbaric eery fellows. "Jack 0
Lantern" has an awful fic-
tional history with beheading
and the like. All this is
graphically described in a
number of resource books,
that may be found in any
public library.
As Jews, we have so many
wonderful holidays, in which
both young and old can enjoy
and celebrate. There is ab-
solutely no need to engage in
this barbaric, paganistic and
sadistic Christian holiday.

Do a little research on
behalf of your children, look
into our wonderful Jewish
holidays and you will soon see
that they have rich, exciting
and meaningful days to
celebrate, with great pride,
which will instill in them a
great love in our wonderful
religion.

Israel Blasts
Terror Proposal

United Nations (JTA) — An
Arab proposal to convene an
international conference that
would define terrorism and
differentiate it from struggles
for national liberation was de-
nounced by Israel Oct 21 as a
ploy intended to "legitimize"
terrorism "past and future."
The "Godfathers are seek-
ing to define organized
crime," Israel's ambassador to
the United Nations,
Binyamin Netanyahu, said of
the proposal presented to the
General Assembly.
