Nebraska Ships
Torah to Iceland

Omaha, Neb. (JTA) — The
legacy of the Kapulier Shul,
closed almost two years ago,
will infuse Iceland's tiny
Jewish community.
One of the former
Synagogue's Torahs has been
donated to the new Jewish
chapel in the U.S. Navy facili-
ty in Reykjavik. The chapel is
home to the northern Atlan-
tic island nation's only Jewish
congregation.
The Torah ultimately will
belong to a civilian congrega-
tion to be formed, according
to Rabbi Victor Solomon, a
reserve colonel in the Air
Force who will have the Thrah
repaired and then personally
deliver it to the chapel.
The only Torah currently
available to the Jews in
Iceland "is a child's Torah,"
said Sherry Austin, whose
husband, Sgt. James Austin,
is stationed at Offutt Air
Base. He previously was sta-
tioned in Iceland, where the
couple participated in the
Jewish community and saw
the need for a Torah.

Young Conductor

Sydney (JTA) — Thn-year-
old Alex Negrin became the
youngest person in Australia
to conduct a symphony or-
chestra when he led the
Sydney Orchestra on Sept. 18.
And he didn't conduct a
"pops" song, but rather the
last movement of Beethoven's
Ninth Symphony, complete
with chorus, of course. Alex,
a singer, pianist and student
of the Emanuel School, had
volunteered for the role in a
letter.

U of Toronto
Adds Yiddish

Thronto (JTA) — A course in
Yiddish and another in
Jewish ethics have been add-
ed to the Jewish studies cur-
riculum at the University of
Toronto.
The second-year advanced
Yiddish course will be part of
the Department of Germanic
Languages and Literature
and financed by the Toronto
Jewish Congress on a three-
year trial basis.
The one-year Yiddish
course was unattractive to
students, according to the
department, because they
could not specialize in the
language. Isaac (Itch)
Shochet, the first-year Yid-
dish teacher, was pleased at
the news, saying it "ensures
Yiddish at the university in-
definitely."
