FRIDAY, OCT. 23, 1987
t's tough to be the chief
executive officer's wife
and come out singing
. . . She has to be better than
good or you know what the
customers will say ... that
it's a good thing her husband
is the boss.
But Nina Machus leaves
very little doubt in proving
herself a big favorite in Sal-
ly's Saloon at Machus Sly Fox
on Hunter in Birmingham
. . . The wife of Robert
Machus does a superb job .. .
handling the mike with much
professionalism as she goes
from song to song in her
"Broadway Remembrances"
on Thursday evenings during
this month . . . Nina's three
very-well paced sets display
her strong but tender voice,
with its excellent execution of
melodious sound . . . Nina's
gracious smile is ever present
while weaving beauteous
notes together with a vibrant
melody.
Her 8:30 performances are
accompanied at the piano. by
Martin Burwell with deft
touches of the ivories as he
wears a different hat (he has
18) at each performance .. .
Some of the nostalgic songs
include Try To Remember
from The Fantasticks, Memory
from Cats, Tonight from West
Side Story, and so many more
. . . And it is so good to see an
entertainer present stylish
vocal magic without trying to
milk the audience for
applause.
Nina, a graduate from the
University of Michigan
School of Music, is director of
vocal music at the Cranbrook
Schools . . . soloist at the First
Church of Christ Scientist in
Birmingham, a member of St.
Dunstan's Theater Guild, and
has played leading roles in
Carousel and Fiorello . . . As
director of the Cranbrook
Kingswood Madrigal Singers-
who appears often for
Michigan Cancer Foundation
at David and Doreen
Hermelin's home, she has per-
formed in both England and
Denmark.
Martin Burwell at the
keyboard is both an ac-
complished pianist and
organist, and was recently ac-
companist for musical produc-
tions at Greenfield Village
. . . He backs Nina with preci-
sion timing.
Nina's smile, poise and
presentation at Sally's Saloon
of Machus Sly Fox are
beautiful to see as she wafts
. . .
her soprano voice in gracious
offerings.
Earlier in the day, I had
lunch with Nina and Mary Jo
Cinador at Sly Fox, with its
large red booths, dark brown
woods, stained glass on one
wall and mirrors separating
two rooms . . . Framed pic-
tures are all about . . .
Seating at Machus Sly Fox,
which opened in 1973, is for
about 200 . . . and it is always
so interesting to watch the
trained personnel at Machus
operations . . . Like Lynne
Bowlby, our fine waitress at
lunchtime . . . She tells the
day's specials and leaves the
card at tables for customers to
peruse . The Machus
theory no doubt, is that per-
sons hear the specials, but
cannot remember all of them
. . . this is so very true .. .
And when was the last time
you were able to make an im-
mediate decision on the
choices told by a waitperson?
I had a wonderful piece of
orange roughy . . . solid, yet
tender, very tasty and a gOod-
ly portion . .. My salad was
cold and crisp . . . and those
Machus rolls . . . good enough
to make a meal on.
Brad Kimmelman is head
chef at Machus Sly Fox
Mark Weiss its manager .. .
and Karel Rush, hostess.
Dinner that same evening
at Sally's Saloon of Machus
Sly Fox . . . with Detroit News
feature wiz Diane Hofsess
and hubby Ron Hoffman,
Chuck Muer's marketing
genius, was another
delightful experience ...
revealing the like decor of
Sally's Saloon, which, in-
cidently, was Birmingham's
first bar, with its red glass
lights and reds, and dark
browns . . . Personable Karen
Moss brought me the wonder-
ful lemon chicken that is
ordered from the Sly Fox -
Heart Smart sector of its
menu . . . boneless, skinless
and cooked to perfection.
There is continuous piano
music at Sally's Saloon .. .
Cynthia Schiappaca is there
Thursdays, Mary Agnello on
Fridays and Saturdays, and
Tim Lambert Monday
through Wednesday.
Machus Sly Fox is a Birm-
ingham beauty mark . . . The
outside has a red and white
canopy, greens, vines and a
veranda that would be just
perfect for outside dining.
Machus means gracious
dining in a lovely atmosphere
. . . coupled with expert
personnel.
The addition of soprano
Nina Machus is a new and
