Hundreds of representa- tives of religious and racial civil rights organizations, in- cluding the American Jewish Committee and the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, will convene for a three-day convention on human rights in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, site last year of several bombings of federal buildings and the home of a Roman Catholic priest. The overall theme of the con- ference will be prejudice in America today, and its impact on the Northwest. It is no accident that Coeur d'Alene was chosen for the conference, the first as- sembled by the Northwest Coalition Against Malicious Harassment, which was for- malized in April in response to the bombings. This small tourist town in the heart of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains was the focus of the Aryan Nations-Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, a violently racist, anti-Semitic group that adheres to the tenets of the Christian Iden- tity movement, claiming that the Jews are the children of Satan. The group is equally hateful of Blacks, Orientals, American Indians and Roman Catholics. Two members of the group, David Dorr and Edward Haw- ley, are currently facing charges for their part in the Coeur d'Alene bombings, and have already been convicted of counterfeiting. Other members of this and related hate groups have this year been convicted of crimes rang- ing from counterfeiting to murder. Coeur d'Alene has instead become known for its involve- ment in the cause of human rights, manifested through the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, and its outgrowth, the North- west Coalition Against Malicious Harassment. The Coalition pushed for, and won in July, the most powerful anti-terrorist legislation in the United States. (JTA) — The recent introduction of pork and shellfish in a cafeteria of Brandeis Univer- sity does not — as some facul- ty critics claim — diminish the Jewish character of the school, according to its presi- dent, Evelyn Handler. "How many Jews do you know who keep kosher?" she asked in a recent interview. "Brandeis consists of Jews of every stripe, from the most Orthodox to those who are non-practicing but feel very culturally and passionately Jewish . . . There is nothing stronger about Brandeis than its ties to the Jewish com- munity." The university has one kosher dining hall, and the other dining halls have always served non-kosher food. To Handler, the availability of pork and shellfish is no different than offering cheeseburgers, and she is sure that those who keep strict kashrut would agree. She said Brandeis must be viewed not as a Jewish university but as "a non- sectarian university with strong Jewish support. We want every student to be com- fortable here. We pride ourselves on our diversity." The comfort argument has been challenged by some faculty members. "Can anyone believe that there is a student anywhere whose deci- sion to enter Brandeis will de- pend on whether he can get a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich for lunch?" asked Prof. Marvin Fox, director of the Lown School of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, and now on sabbatical. He agreed with Bernard Reisman, professor of American Jewish communal studies and director of the Hornstein program in Jewish communal service, that pork and shellfish were more offen- sive than mixing dairy pro- ducts with beef. The former "psychologically connote the separateness of the Jews," Reisman said. "Even Jews that don't observe kashrut have a psychological reaction to pork and shellfish."
