forces, according to several
sources, has become far
slicker and more sophisti-
cated in the last few years.
"We really saw this in
response to the PLO closing
bill," said an aide to Rep. Jack
Kemp (R-N.Y.) "The material
they were sending out was
very well done, very expen-
sive. We were inundated."
It also helps that these
groups now have access to
people who know how the
system works — like former
Senator James Abourezk,
who heads the Arab-Ameri-
can Anti-Discrimination
Committee.
Groups on the Christian
Right like Contact, America
— an ultra-conservative group
that worked actively to sup-
port the nomination of Judge
Robert Bork to the Supreme
Court and has given a forum
to people advocating such
measures as the quaranteen-
ing of people carrying the
AIDS virus — claim ready
access to dozens of congres-
sional offices. The Contact
ministry, which revolves
around an hour-a-day radio
program, often features inter-
views with friendly senators,
congressmen, and White
House staffers.
Even further on the fringes
are groups like the one
operated by Rev. Dale
Crowley, Jr., the scion of a
well-known fundamentalist
family whose ministry now
revolves around a vehement
anti-Zionism that claims
Biblical justification for a
harsh anti-Israel, anti-Jewish
stance.
Crowley has been active on
Capitol Hill, lobbying against
the PLO-closing bills offered
by Sen. Robert Dole and Rep.
Jack Kemp. Recently, Crow-
ley claimed to be in the office
of a congressperson when the
State Department action clos-
ing the PLO offices was
announced. -
Crowley's anti-Zionism is
based on his belief that the
"Israel" referred to in the
New Testement really refers
to born-again Christians, not
to the national entity of a
Jewish Israel.
"There's no danger that
these guys are going to be a
major force in the legislative
process anytime soon," said
one worker for a big Jewish
group here. "But they are cer-
tainly developing a better
understanding of how the pro-
cess works, and they exert
more influence than they
used to."

I IN BRIEF

Officials Mum
On Saudi Visit

Washington (JTA) — Crown
Prince Abdallah of Saudi
Arabia ended a four-day visit
to Washington Wednesday
without giving any public in-
dication that the Saudis are
now willing to be helpful in
the Middle East peace
process.
A State Department of-
ficial, who was briefing
reporters on the visit Tues-
day, said the Reagan Ad-
ministration stressed its corn-
mmitment to the peace pro-
cess in the meetings with Ab-
dallah.
Maintaining that he could
not reveal all the Saudis are
doing to help the U.S. in the
Gulf, the official said, "I hope
the day will come when these
good deeds will be widely
recognized."
It is this Saudi support that
apparently convinced a ma-
jority of the Senate and
House to drop opposition to a
proposed $1 billion arms sale
once Maverick anti-tank
missiles were removed from
the arms package. The com-
promise agreement between
Senate opponents and the Ad-
ministration was reached
despite a widely held feeling
in Congress that the Saudis
have not done anything to
help bring about negotiations
between Israel and its Arab
neighbors.

`U.S. Cannot
Shut PLO Office

Washington (JTA) — The
State Department has in-
dicated that it cannot legally
close the Palestine Liberation
Organization's observer office
at the United Nations in New
York, even if ordered to do so
by Congress.
"Closing that mission
would not be consistent with
our international legal
obligations under the UN
headquarters agreement,"
Department spokesman
Charles Redman said. Red-
man was commenting on the
action of the Senate, which in
approving the $3.6 billion
State Department authoriza-
tion bill, adopted by voice vote
an amendment by Sen.
Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) to
close the PLO's UN mission,
as well as its information of-
fice in Washington.
