their choice for chairman over
Chicago architect Ray Eps-
tein, former president of the
Council of Jewish Federa-
tions. "It was a very tough
decision," explained one
Chicago source, "because
Epstein is one of the best in-
tellects we have." But, adds
another insider, "Epstein
couldn't have been in Jeru-
salem more than one or two
months out of the year. That's
where Kaplan comes in. He is
there for weeks, sometimes
months at a time, and we
could count on him to be on
the spot."
The compromise of sorts
would be that the Diaspora
group would approve Levin-
sky as chairman, however
reluctantly, if their man
Kaplan be given power in
practice and function.
On the eve of the meeting in
Jerusalem, though, no one
was predicting the ultimate
outcome.
While no meaningful alter-
natives to Levinsky's can-
didacy are on the table,
former Israeli finance
minister Itzhak Moda'i's
name has already been
floated as a substitute. If a
deadlock develops next week,
other names are expected.
There is even a chance that
Likud candidate Benyamin
Netanyahu will reconsider
his candidacy. Support for
Netanyahu is widespread.
Marcuvitz himself cautions,
"I wouldn't even want to
predict my own vote. At this
point I expect to attend the
meeting. I will want to look at
alternatives." But he added,
"Unfortunately, so far I
haven't one."

endel who? That
was the widespread
response to the news
this month that South
African industrialist Mendel
Kaplan is to succeed Jerrold
Hoffberger as Chairman of
the Board of Governors of the

Mendel Kaplan is unlikely
to remain a mystery for long.
While consolidating his
family's massive industrial
interests, which span four
continents, he has , quietly
been building himself a.power
base in the Jewish world.
And while he might not yet
enjoy instant name recogni-
tion among Jewish communi-
ties outside South Africa, he
has clearly made an impres-
