Hank Greenberg and Al
Rosen led the American
League in homeruns. Rosen,
the present general manager
of the San Francisco Giants,
is a strong candidate for ma-
jor league Executive of the
Year. Greenberg hit 58
homeruns in 1938 and had
183 RBIs that year. He was
also the American League
MVP in 1935 and 1940.
Greenberg gets my vote as
the MVP of Jewish major
league baseball players.
Besides being a great player,
he was also a great human
being.
In 1973, Ron Bloomberg
was the first designated hit-
ter (DH). As a member of the
New York Yankees he got a
base on balls from Luis Tiant
of the Boston Red Sox in the
opening game of the season.
Greenberg and Sandy
Koufax are the two Jewish
members of the National
Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown, N.Y. However,
Rod Carew and Jim Palmer
are strong future candidates
for the Hall of Fame.
