Sugar flee
Continued from preceding page
a restaurant at Sugar Tree,
Orchard Lake Rd. north of
Maple . . . Ruby D's is ex-
pected to open around the end
of January, with 76 seats .. .
serving breakfast, lunch and
dinner seven days a week,
from 7 a.m.
It'll be counter service .. .
much different from a
cafeteria . . . Folks will place
their orders and then perhaps
browse about until their
name or number is called .. .
There'll be a lot of salads, in-
cluding Ruby Dennison's
well-noted smoked fish salads
. . . plus a bevy of home-
cooked food for both dining in
and carry-out . . . including
pastries.
Decor interior will have an
art deco look being dreamed
up by designer Ron Rey.
IT'S NOW over 500 pounds
. . . That's how much white
fish is sold weekly at Hoa
Kow Inn on Nine Mile just
west of Coolidge in Oak Park
. . . Hardly seems possible,
but owners Gene Woo and dad
Dan Woo actually go through
about 75 pounds of white fish
per day . . . a boast not many
American restaurants can
make . . . Plus Hoa Kow's
wonderful broiled white fish
. . . a whole tail at a
remarkably low price . . . it
can now be gotten in
Szechuan style or Cantonese
. . . A big point is that few
folks have found even the
smallest bone in their white
fish . . . and it is so very tasty
. . . Also, the fish is not cook-
ed in any butter ingredient.
Years back, when I lived in
Oak Park, I used to take Scott
there as a baby (Hoa Kow is
in it's 33rd year) . . . When
Scott and Bonnie came here
from Atlanta for the holidays,
of course seven-month-old
Matthew was with them .. .
and of course I took my grand-
son for his Hoa Kow visit as
if it were a traditional thing
. . . Matt didn't have the
white fish or any of Gene's or
Dan's good Chinese food .. .
but boy did he love those
bread sticks or carrot sticks or
celery sticks or whatever .. .
Matthew enjoys anything he
can grab and put into his
mouth . . . No different than
Scott was, I guess . . . Except
for one thing . . . Matt doesn't
cry as much as Scott did when
he didn't get his way . . . Peo-
ple probably used to say,
"What a spoiled brat!"
IT'S NOW Pat's Sutton
Deli . . . has been for almost
two months now . . . when Pat
Hubert and her five children
took over . . . She had been a
waitress at Sutton for 12
years . . . and still waits on
tables . . . but now in a much
cleaner, much more pleasent
and much better atmosphere
. . . The good service shows,
too.
Former regulars who for
one reason or another stopped
going to Sutton Deli are
returning because of the
change . . . Pat has done a
complete turnabout with the
delicatessen which at one
time was so popular . . . Pat's
Sutton Deli is on Nine Mile
and Lahser, across from Plum
Hollow Lanes.
IT'S GARY Rose and the
Gitano's Trio strolling among
tables now at Casa Arman-
do's, Orchard Lake Rd. bet-
ween 12 and 13 Mile, Tuesday
through Thursday, 7 to 10
p.m.; Friday and Saturday til
11 p.m.
Gary is on the lead guitar
and vocals; brother Tony
strums a standup bass; and
Johnny Giovanni plays a ter-
rific violin . . . Tony and
Johnny also do backup oral
rhythms for Gary . . . as they
weave some fine tunes .. .
Latin, Gypsy, American stan-
dards, etc.
So many people on a health
kick that Armando Galan is
trying to concentrate much of
his Mexican food in healthful
cooking preparation . . .
Everything is made with
vegetable oil, for example .. .
One of the big favorites at
Casa Armando's is something
I always have there . . .
boneless and skinless breast
of chicken charcoal-broiled,
with slices of avocado and
tomatoes . . . It's a delicious
dish.
After the Detroit Tigers
wrapped up the American
League East divisional title
by defeating the Toronto Blue
Jays, many of them came to
celebrate at Armando's .. .
He is popular with the
ballplayers who have followed
him from his former
Downtown Detroit locale.
Casa Armando is open
seven days a week, Monday
through Thursday, 11 a.m. to
11 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to
midnight; Saturday, 5 p.m. to
midnight; and Sunday 5 p.m.
to 11 p.m. . . . Beginning
Nov. 1, it will be open seven
days from 11 a.m.
CONGRATS . . . to Pauline
Weiss (Leo) on her birthday.
