Others ran errands, made ar-
rangements for the media
horde or took care of VIPs,
such as U.S. Vice President
George Bush who attended a
Series game in Detroit.
Cohen, 45, became a
baseball fan in 1951, when
the native Detroiter attended
his first major league game at
Tiger Stadium with his
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah day
camp group. Twenty years
later, his baseball career
began. He became a writer,
commentator, photographer,
publisher, and, since 1984,
director of group sales for the
Tigers.
Cohen is responsible for
sales to groups of 25 or more
for regular games, or special
nights such as B'nai B'rith
night. "B'nai B'rith would be
one of our largest groups — I
think they bought 1,200
tickets this year. But also,
besides group sales, I deal
with other things. We have a
program of honorary batboys,
so I'm in charge of the group.
I have to stock up the liquor
rooms. We had a couple
queens, Miss This or Miss
That. I sort of chauffeur them
around, get their picture
taken with players. The
Tigers trust me — they figure
I won't touch the liquor or the
queens."
The Tigers were familiar
with Cohen, through his jour-
nalistic endeavors, before
they hired him. Getting the
Tiger job, he says, was bashert
— something that was meant
to be. Cohen worked full time
in the Wayne County
treasurer's office from 1961 to
1983. County Executive Bill
Lucas offered retirement, at a
reduced pension, for all
20-year workers, and Cohen
called the Tigers. "They told
me there was a job here — and
they knew that I'm an Or-
thodox Jew, that I wouldn't
work Saturdays — and they
said, "Well this is the only
thing here that you don't have
to come in on a Saturday.' " It
was the only job in the
organization that he could
take, and it had just opened
up. "Two months later, two
months earlier, it would have
never happened."
Cohen's baseball career
began by accident. He called
Vince Doyle one night in
1972, following Doyle and
Norm Plummer's sports talk
show on WWJ Radio. Cohen
called to talk about Hank
Aaron, who was then chasing
Babe Ruth's all-time home
run record, but when Cohen
asked about the next night's
guest he was ecstatic.
"Hoot Evers! That's my all-
time favorite player. I said, if
there's anybody in the world
I'd want to meet it would be
