Cloisonne

The making of cloisonne first started in the Yuan Dynasty (1279.1368
AD). The first step is the moulding of the body out of copper. When the
article is well shaped a filigree is soldered onto the base. This step
requires great care and high creativeness. Copper wires ore fixed on
the body according to the artists own rich experiences, imagination
and aesthetical views. A mixture of minerals and ores are applied,
and the piece is fired to secure the wire permanently. Then a process
called enameling is begun. This requires many applications of
enamels and then tiring. Each time the piece is fired the enamel
shrinks and shrinks and requires an additional application of enamel
and then again firing until all of the recesses created by the wire are
completely filled. The piece then requires 2 separate types of
polishing and gilding. Flux is applied to prevent any rust from
entering metals. Finally electroplating and polishing completes this
magnificent piece of artistry. Each piece distinct.

Road Project
Irks Lebanese

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli of-
ficials confirmed last week
that construction work is be-
ing undertaken inside Leba-
non. But they vigorously
denied Lebanese reports of
Israeli land expropriations in
south Lebanon and that
Israel was changing the inter-
national border.
Israel Radio quoted sources
in northern Israel as saying
the construction work is part
of routine activities and
would soon be completed.
But the Lebanese govern-
ment charges, widely publi-
cized through the country, are
likely to form the basis of a
complaint of the United Na-
tions. They stem from reports
by residents of Alma el Shaab
village and other villages
nearby that the Israelis are
building a new road to link
Israel Defense Force positions
with fences on both sides. The
villagers say they have been
refused access to their fields
and orchards in the four
square kilometers between
the new road and the Israel
border.
According to Israel Radio,
the Alma el Shaab villagers
will be able to resume culti-
vating their land as soon as
the road is completed.

Envoy Checks
On Miller

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A con-
fidential emissary was sent to
the U.S. by the Director
General of the Interior
Ministry, Arye Deri, to deter-
mine whether Shoshana Mil-
ler, converted to Judaism by
a Reform rabbi in the U.S. five
years ago, intends to return to
Israel to claim citizenship,
Davar reported last Monday.
Miller, who arrived in Israel
in 1985 as an immigrant, was
denied status as a Jew by the
rabbinical authorities on
grounds that her conversion
was invalid. She appealed to
the Supreme Court which-
ruled that she must be regi-
stered as Jewish and issued
an identity card.
Miller subsequently re-
turned to the U.S. to care for
her ill father. Her future
plans are not known. The In-
terior Ministry wants to
prepare itself to deal with the
matter should Miller return
to Israel, the newspaper
reported. The Interior
Ministry confirmed the report
but stressed that the unnam-
ed envoy did not meet per-
sonally with Miller but
sought to ascertain her plans
through a third party.
