Tip O'Neill

the Jewish State, boasting, "I
have more forests over there
in my name than any other
Irishman around — but I've
never been able to find them."
O'Neill's career in public of-
fice spans six decades and
eight presidents. He retired
this year after serving ten
consecutive years as Speaker
of the House, the longest term
in history. Describing his new
occupation as "lecturer and
booksalesman," the former
Speaker boasted his book
holds the number two spot on
the New York Times best-
seller list. "It's surpassing the
wildest dreams of both the
publisher (Random House)
and the author," said O'Neill
who was paid an undisclosed
amount from Random House
up front. "Now they make the
money and it tickles my ego."
Man of the House was writ-
ten in collaboration with Bill
Novak, who co-authored Lee
Iacocca's best-selling
biography and is now working
on the biography of former
refusenik and Soviet Jewry
activist Natan Sharansky.
Said O'Neill: "The
dramatic release of Scharan-
sky, whom I welcomed to the
Unted States Capitol during
my last term as Speaker,
must serve as a reminder of
the importance of maintain-
ing pressure on the Soviets to
honor the Helsinki Accord
regarding human rights and
religious rights?'
Known around the country
and parts of the world simply
as "Tip," the 75-year-old
father of five — one of whom
became lieutenant governor
of Massachusetts — has stuck
by his axiom that "timing is
everything." In fact, that's
how he got his nickname —
from an old baseball player
whose timing was so sharp he
could tip off foul pitches un-
til he either got hit or was
walked.
O'Neill spent most of the
evening shaking hands and
meeting the guests, including
Florine Mark-Ross, president
of the Weight Watchers Group
who kibbitzed with the
size-54 Speaker about Weight
Watchers.
