BETWEEN CROOKS AND COOLIDGE
OPEN MONDAY AND
THURSDAY UNTIL 9 P.M.

For many Jews, especially
those stemming from the
Marmarosh district of
Hungary (the heart of Tran-
sylvania), the Star of David
around Dracula's neck brings
back memories of the old
blood libel that was prevalent
in medieval Hungary.
Claiming they are unable to
retrieve the boxes, General
Mills has attempted to rectify
the situation by removing the
star from the next four
million boxes scheduled for
sale this winter. In addition,
they removed the necklace
from Chocula television com-
mercials released this week.
"At this stage, it's just out
there," said Shaffer. "We did
everything that we could do.
The people involv,ed lacked
the necessary sensitivity. It
was an oversight that you
would call an honest error
without intent that we think
we've remedied."
Beider was pleased with
General Mills' response.
"It's nice to see that the
companies are responsive to
this kind of thing," he said.
The question of why Bela
Lugosi was wearing a six-
pointed star for the 1931 film,.
however, remains a mystery.
Lugosi died in 1956 and was
buried in his Dracula cape.
The film's director, Tod
Browning, died in 1962.
"I don't think there's

necessarily a Jewish .connota-
tion to it," said Elliot
Wilhelm, curator of film at
the Detroit Institute of Arts.
"I don't think they were try-
ing to pass Lugosi off for be-
ing Jewish. It was purely
decorative."

on issues — not each other,"
he said.
Tuesday's event was the se-
cond in a series of major fun-
draisers for the '88 Allied
Jewish Campaign, which
thus far has received nearly
$12 million in pledges
towards their $26 million goal
— some $1 million dollars
more than the same people
contributed last year at this
time.
"Some of you may be asked
to dig a little deeper into your
pockets," O'Neill told the
nearly 80 people in atten-
dance. "It's for a worthy
cause."
O'Neill, who was in Detroit
to promote his new best-
selling book, Man of the
House, said he felt right at
home at the Campaign's
cocktail reception.
"I have a bit of a reputation
of being a friend of Israel,"
said the North Cambridge
native, who has twice visited
