engagement of their
daughter, Lisa, to Dr. Wayne
Karbal, son of Mrs. Marilyn
Karbal of Bloomfield Hills.
Miss Wagner earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree in in-
terior design at Michigan
State University. She is
employed by a design firm in
Chicago.
Her fiance earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree at the
University of Michigan and a
D.D.S. degree at Nor-
thwestern University.
A January wedding is
planned.

TWO Will Twin
B'not Mitzvah

Joy Simmer, daughter of
Lee and Joel Simmer, and
Lisa Zeskin, daughter of San-
dra and H. Jay Zeskind, will
twin the observance of their
b'not mitzvah celebration at
Mat Shalom Synagogue at 9
a.m. Saturday with Evgenya
Chernobilsky, daughter of
Elena and Boris Cher-
nobilsky of Moscow, USSR.
Chernobilsky` and his fami-
ly applied to leave the Soviet
Union in May 1975 and were
refused the following year.
Since that time, he has work-
ed at a series of odd jobs with
periods of unemployment in
between. His wife teaches
Hebrew. The Chernobilskys
organized a kindergarten.
After being denied an exit
visa, Chernobilsky par-
ticipated in a series of
peaceful protest demonstra-
tions. During one such
demonstration in Octboer
1976, he was arrested and
sentenced to 15 days in
Butyrskaya prison on alleged
charges of "organizing a
demonstration, striking
members of the Soviet militia
and hooliganism."
He was arrested again on
May 10, 1981, at an activists'
gathering in the Opalikha
woods, outside of Moscow, and
accused of "beating a
policeman." Chernobilsky
maintained that the charges
against him were false. He
did not appear at his trial.
Soviet police forcibly arrested
him after storming his
Moscow apartment. At his
trial Chernobilsky was con-
victed despite a "not guilty"
plea and sentenced to one
year in a labor camp.
Joy and Lisa have written
to Evgenya and will attempt
to reach the Chernobilskys by
phone.
