(e.g., Walker-Whitworth,
Pelton and Lonetree). Pollard
acted dishonestly, as he readi-
ly admits, but, it may be
argued, not disloyally. His
case lacks the betrayal motif
invariably present in a case of
espionage, and certainly com-
mon to the other cases to
which Pollard's is unjustly
compared.
utterly
It
seems
preposterous to me that when
you consider the basic distinc-
tion between, for example,
Pollard's well advertised
disclosure of PLO positions in
Tunis and Sgt. Lonetree's
heartless revelation of the
identities and whereabouts of
several well-placed U.S. in-
telligence agents operating
perilously in the Soviet
Union, coupled with the fur-
ther distinction of Pollard's
ready confession, his guilty
plea, and his exemplary
cooperation with an ex-
hausting battery of federal in-
vestigative authorities, that
Pollard would instead suffer
the far harsher penalty.
When you add to that
outrageous injustice, the ob-
vious implications of the
broader "damage" issues rais-
ed by Lonetree's betrayal, and
the unsettling fact that the
judge in Pollard's case went
beyond the terms of the plea
bargain agreement to

term, exceeding even the
harsh prosecutorial argument
of "substantial incarcera-
tion," the disproportion is un-
fathomable, to say the least.
In sum, whatever your
reading of the case of
Jonathan Pollard, a blatant
miscarriage of justice has
been wrought just the same.

mitted a grievous wrong, to be
sure. The truth here does not

paint pretty. However, the
political maneuvering and
press orchestrations aside, the
results — a life forfeiture —
mixed with the special facts of
his case and the irresistible
commands of justice cry out
for an open-minded, serious-
ly thorough and impartial
rehearing.
As the case is presently on
petition -for sentence reduc-
tion, I pray that the court
reconsider its earlier premise
and in the noblest tradition of
our adjudicative process,
validate the spirit of compas-
sion. Jonathan deserves, I
submit, a legitimate second
chance.

in the Diaspora who are af-
fluent and buy expensive ap-
pliances for them, airplane
tickets for family visits
abroad, and help in buying a
home. Others are still spen-
ding as they were forced to
under the recent three-digit
inflation.
But if life in Israel is such
a ball, as Helen Davis con-
cludes, why is it that the ma-
jority of American ()him have-
returned to the United
States? Any why is it that a
considerable number of
Israelis, some of whom serv-
ed in the army, and all of
whom love their native land,
have moved to the United
States? Could it be the reali-
ty for employee Israelis (and
that means most of them),
who earn approximately 25
percent of American incomes,
pay a huge income tax out of
this, and find in the super-
markets and shops the same
prices as in the United States
or much higher? Could it be
that they became exhausted
from the daily financial
struggle and endless military
tensions?
The men and women of
Israel man the ramparts; they
face a hostile continent to in-
sure that all world Jewry will
have a homeland. And it is
they who make the big
sacrifices in loss of lives and
broken hearts. Israelis are not
obligated to lead lives of
poverty-stricken idealism,
while we luxuriate in the
Diaspora.
Wake up, Helen Davis. A
Jewish homeland in return
for a UJA donation: That's a
bargain!
